HD generally means 720 lines (normal TV is 576).  When you see a TV that claims it is "HD ready" they almost always mean 720.  "Full" HD is a higher resolution - 1080 lines.  If you're looking to buy a "full" HD tv you need to look closely in the shops, you're looking for anything that says 1080 (some ill say 1920x1080, others will say 1080p).  If it says 1080i (pretty rare I think) avoid.  1080p is what you really want :)  (p is progressive, i is interlaced, interlacing sucks).

cheers for that buddy!

edit: although any idea why the 'full hd' version wont play properly? ie wierd colours and freezes... is it becuase my monitors max resolution is 1280x1024?

I think so, but can you buy it in HD?

The trailer looks amazing. Just beautiful. You can see they've really thought about some of the shots too.
Its great to have video bigger than your screen.

Possibly, maybe its just too much for the PC, it might not be able to read it off the HDD quick enough. Works under the same conditions on my PC tho.  ;D

nope, it's cos your pc isn't powerful enough to cope with processing it and outputting it to your screen.  FWIW on my PC (amd 64 3000+ and a fancy graphics card) VLC had very similar problems but windows media player played it fine.  Though I'm guessing you've never heard of VLC so probably not the problem :P

VLC is king!

That video looks fantastic, a fresh change to the norm in bike videos!

Yeah, Virtuous is really amazing!

The quality, even on my laptop screen, really is amazing, and I'm sure it will be even better on my 2 HD PC screens when I get home. This is the trailer that has inspired me to move to HD.

re-Focus, Earthed, Clays films etc are all shot on HDV, but at the moment its not really commercially viable to do a production run of HD films.

Personally I thought the Virtuous trailer was a bit flat, most of it was still shots from a tripod, which look very nice and all, but would be boring as hell for an hour.

It looks nice though.

I agree, the first anti gravity was shot from tripod IIRC, and yes, it was very boring for an hour! But yeah it does look nice, I'd quite like to see the whole thing.

Really looking forward to this coming out, but I don't have a bluray player... I wonder if they'll offer it as a 10-20GB download... they should, because if they do they'll get my money, and if they don't, they wont :P

What, so its only being released on Bluray?

So not a standard DVD then? Sooo, forgive my technical ignorance, bluray disks cant be played on a normal DVD player. or laptop?? :-[

Title: Re: Virtuous Trailer first HD MTB film
Post by: seb on March 29, 2008, 00:29:53 AM
It may be released on DVD as well.  It definitely won't ONLY be released on DVD, as the whole point is it's HD, and DVD can't do HD.

HD-DVD has died, so it'll be coming out on Bluray, I'm sure.  There may be a DVD version as well for the masses.

Bluray discs cannot be played in a normal DVD player, you need a Bluray drive, which comes in one of three guises:

* one for your PC, just like your DVD drive.  Many laptops come with bluray drives these days
* standalone Bluray player - just like the DVD player you most likely have under your TV at the moment

and by far and away the most common I image:

* sony PS3

I have none of the above, but can still watch HD content by downloading it from t'internet.  My screen isn't quite full HD (1980x1080) but at 1680x1050 it's close enough that things like that Virtuous trailer (and hence the whole film) look AMAZING.

Looks boring.

99% of it will probably be in slow-mo too.

I won't be buying it.

Yes, it is coming out on Blu-Ray but a short while after it comes out on DVD.

I would imagine they will release it on Blue-ray just as soon as they make enough from selling the DVD version to cover the astronomical costs of producing a Blue-ray disc...

I think the whole thing was a pretty impressive marketing ploy though, claiming to be the first HD movie, even though that was a lie, everyone believed them. And then to release it in standard definition with no definitive answer on the date of the Hi-def version too...

Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of new bike films, keeps people like me on our toes, but I don't like the way it has been promoted.

Also, New World Disorder is partly shot on HDCam, which is much better quality than the bog standard HDV they shot Virtuous on, but you don't hear them going on about HiDef...

Not much point if you can only buy as DVD tho. (Don't get me wrong I know it'll have its benefits but the end medium is still gonna be the quality 'bottleneck'.)

If this is released as on HD, before any other biking film, then its entitled to its 'hype'.

doesn't mean it wont be good, i dont need to see 360 tailwhip backflips off of 60ft drops to enjoy a film.  this looks like a film that will make me want to get out on my bike, not a film that'll make me think i suck and i'll never be able to do 360 tailwhip backflips off of 60ft drops :)

f**k me neither do I. I'd rather see some of the worlds top DH racers. If I wanted tricks, I'd buy a BMX dvd.

The website still says in negotiations. There may be licensing issues with Sony for Blu-Ray – I guess it’s expensive on such a small scale.

I like the trailer, like the music, pretty good picture on my 1080p tv (but by no means the best I’ve seen) – but the riding wasn’t hugely inspiring.

Really enjoyed the whole thing, but it'd be a whole lot better in full HD. In fact, that was kind of the selling point of the whole thing  ::)

That's just a matter of opinion really, I actually really enjoy virtuous-esque films, inspires me to ride...

I wouldn't describe some of the riders (in virtuous at least) as "amateur freeriders" either, one of them's definitely at WC level for example. It's a fairly DH orientated film.

I liked it, but thought there was a bit too many scenic shots between the riding, perhaps I'd appreciate them more in HD tho. I think there might be a few too many fixed zoomed in shots too. I liked the amount of riding on natural tracks and the DH Track section was great. Worth the £12 I'd say.

I really really enjoyed it, reckon it'd be worth every penny in HD.
