Title: The *best* grippy wide platform pedals...?
Post by: psyickphuk on April 28, 2008, 18:43:16 PM
I'm going to replace the crappy non name pedals on my HT with my Easton flat boys from the DH bike.

What shall I replace them with?
I really like the staritlines - they look pimp & are really grippy and wide, but are pricey and out of stock everywhere.
Any thing else that's as good?

*edit: balls, sorry mods please move to kit and equipment.

Why not maybe say get another set of flatboys - they are excellent pedals; fair enough though if you want somthing a bit different.

Stick with the Eastons.  Unless you can you still get cully's?  Those things are sick...

I've had Easton, Atomlab, Club Roost, VP, DMR, Wellgo, etc. pedal over many years

and easily without a doubt the best flat pedals i have used (for 2 years now) are Syncros's Mental Alloy pedals (not the cromo)

stupidly tough, insane grip, superb durability with their 4 bearing / 1 bush setup (mine are 2 years old, have been used all over UK and Canada and never even opened up), great feel with flat shoes, and are as light as DMR V-12s

expensive (around £100) but worth every penny....

just don't use the long pins because they will tear you to pieces, the short pins have more than enough grip even with a Vans shoes, let alone 5-10s

Tioga Surefoot pedals are where its at. Wide platform, grippy as you need, pretty light, good looking and sealed bearings all for £40. Ive had mine a couple of months and theyre still fine. A mate of mine has had some for over a year now and the bearings in those are still fine.

Deffinately worth a look, there on crc if your interested

I am running the surefoots at the moment, really nice pedal, pretty much agree with everything said. only problem I have had is that the pins tear out really easily destroying the thread so that you cant fit replacement pins, think its a combination of the pins being quite long so the leverage is high and the holes not going deep enough into the pedal body. Its probably only a problem for me because my local is tech as hell and has many awkward rocks that seek out pedals though I'm sure for 90% of the uk courses they will last alot longer.

get some LAW moto pedals

I have seen these for just £25 in the back of recent bike mags?

my buddy Hot Carl has these on his Demo7 and they are not actually very grippy, despite how fearsome they look...

f*cking heavy too

Jungle import Syncros if you wanna go for the Mental Alloys...just don't use the long pins as you will have hamburger for shins  :D

On this topic, my Funns are the best pedals I've ever used. However they are always ripping pins out on rocks and the threads have got knackered now so the new ones I put in do not stay there very well.

So: I've taken them into the lab workshop, going to drill through them, tap the thread and then use bolts like on an atomlab that come up from underneath, will post back here how I get on!

Orge.

avoid these like the plague in my opinion. Ran them for a few weeks, had an incident with one of the pedals clipping a rock at cwmcarn (probably due to the fact they are rediculously large)

The outer cage just mashed in on itself, plus the fact the grip isnt even that impressive.. the bearings were smooth though :)

What are peoples views on Gusset Slim Jims?

Note - My pedals must be capable of handling a battering.

And what's the difference between the DMR v8's, and v12's?
Can all the pins be replaced in the v8's, and is the pedal as strong as the v12?

James

My friends got them and there pretty s**t. Not much grip, the platform's pretty small and the anodising wears of real quick.

I've had Funn Soljams and they were alot grippier with a larger platform. I'm now running straitlines and love them. Worth every penny.

Easton Flatboys.

I ride in size 12 five tens and there plenty wide enough , a good 10-12mm wider than my V12s.

.243 Racing Hollow.

Really wide, great grip, not all that heavy.

I'd stay away from Slim Jims if I were you, I have a pair and after a couple of months of not too heavy use the axles came loose and the bearings feel as though they a crumbling away. I found the grip with the standard pins was pretty bad, but that did improve with some longer pins. The threads also seem to be made of cheese as I keep ripping pins out. Finally, as Hopeless says, mine went from the standard black to silver with black patches in a few weeks.

I'd say the opposite... mine have been awesome now i got some long pins for it. I've had it for about 3 months and as of yet there's no play. The ano does come off fast though, but i don't really mind for the price...  :)

The replies in relation to the SlimJims are a great help.

Its quite a hard one, i find v8's / v12's platforms are too small.
The Truvativ Holzfellers that i have were ok, just nothing can be replaced, and the threads for the pins strip very easily.
I dont really want to spend more than £35.
Hmmm  :-\

CRC had Sealed bearing Soljams for 35 but I don't know if they still do. I found them a lot better than Slimjims.

Syncros Mental pedals!

I use the alloy versions on my Orange and they rock. Unbelievably grippy and i got them for a good price off ebay brand new. They might be hard to find because i don't think you can buy them online. However get in touch with Jungle the importers and see what they say. Oh and they look great!

kona pedals, make sure the pins have threads on them and there amazing grip, especialy with 5 10's

If you buy the straightline pedals take your time putting the pins in as the threads have not been cleaned out of paint and its quiet easy too strip the threads .. apart from that they are really wide and grippy.

it does depend on shoes aswell i have crank bros 5050's with huge pins that are crap with the wrong shoes, similarly i have shimano mx30 (DX) with the street pins in that are still super grippy with 5/10's

I second the shimano DX's.  Lots of grip with the longer pins put in with any trainer/shoe and the platform was of a decent size.  The also look quite snazzy  ::)

One problem I did have though was the bearings did get a bit loose in them meaning play in the pedal.  Still ran smooth though.

If your DXs are running a little loose, open them up and tighten them a little. They're just cup and cone in the end, same as a shimano hub.

I run DMR V8s.... in comparison to other pedals i've tried (like 50/50s), personally i find them a hell of a lot better. I think it's mainly because of the large openings through the pedals, allow shoes with a bit of flex to sit into them a bit, nice grippy pins aswell.... also increase the grip with Terrors?  ;)

But the V12s are obviously better, fully sealed bearings (only thing i'd say wrong about V8s- mud and grit finds the bearings sharpish  :-\)

So yeh, DMRs all the way!!!  ;D

My brother has been running the 24 bicycles butterfly pedals for literally years, would have thought pushing about 5 or 6 now. They are a bit bent but what can you expect after that long. They're the most grippy pedal i've ever tried (althought that isn't a huge amount i'll be honest). I found them too grippy really as it's a right bitch to move you're foot around on them if you've put it on in the wrong position. Something different too, don't see a lot of 24 bikes stuff. http://www.k-124house.com/BMX-Race-Dirt-Street-Flat-//24-BICYCLES/HDDB465410311a2d2
