There should be enough there for you to look at, and if theres not enough there, use the search button as this has come up a billion and one times.

My advice with the SLRs is go for either the nikon or the canon, but try before you buy, they work very differently and some people get on with one brand, but not the other.

As for the compacts, i'd go for the Nikon coolpix personally.

Can this be stickied, so that this doesn't have to be posted every other day?

You might want to add
Nikon D40X,
Canon EOS 450D,
Pentax K10D

D40 ftw ;)

I wouldn't bother with the D40x, its not worth it over the D40 and a D50 is still better if one can be found.

The D50 is a better camera than the D40 or D40x, and is worth getting over them both, as it has a better sensor.

these are supposed to be basic, cheap begginer cameras, nothing else...

And that's exactly what rider has posted... they're all aimed at people coming from compacts.

He's right aswell :P

The d50 is the predessor (sp?) to the d40, and also aimed at the compact upgrader, so to speak.

Simple way to figure it out... Any camera available in silver, as well as traditional SLR black, is usually a beginner-level camera.

Fuji S series are an excellent starter if you dont want to go for an SLR, but want an SLR style camera with full manual settings, apperture and shutter priority and all the rest.

what type of lenses should you get with the dslr's for taking pictures of riding and the like?

Most come with a 18-55mm lens as standard, apart from the sony which comes with an 18-70mm. These should do you fine to start with, as you take more and more shots you'll be able to decide if you need a bigger or smaller lens.  :)

hey just been looking at the nikon d60 as the bundle im looking at has 90quid cash back on it. just wanted to know what other people thought about this camera over the canon eos400d which is what i was also looking at getting?

cheers

Nikon D60 is well worth the cash over the D40 IMO.

I like the Canon EOS-400, only reason i went for the Nikon D60 was the fact i had many lenses' for Nikon's anyway and i liked the mechanical feel of it when you took a picture. It like.. clicks like a standard SLR.

Thought i'd stick this quesiton in here as it's pretty relevant to the thread title-
I've got a mate who's got around £150-£200 for a camera.
He's only ever used compacts, relatively cheap ones and wants and slr for the money he's got.
The best one for his buck.
Anyone got any suggestions?

for a beginner camera i would reccomend a fuji S series. i have got one and its my first slr camera and its so easy to use and has really helped. also, Aikin, the fuji S6500 is around £200 and is really good. however, you cant change lenses. but everything else is the same

for that sort of money your friend will be hard pressed to get anything close to an SLR unless it is second hand. I suggest saving another £100 at least..

I picked up an almost unused 300D with lens off ebay for £150.  Certainly seems good enough to start on.

i am looking at getting one of these (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=250251224204)
does anyone know if that wil take nice biking shots? it has a shutter speed of 1/2000th so i thought it might be good.

Depends if he wants first or second hand. Personally i would not buy a second hand SLR.

i use a panasonic lumix DMC FZ-18 DSLR. its my first camera and its taken some great shots.

all the shots taken by stephen price (me) are from it, it has a pedo standard zoom to 18X!

hopefully it will make it to the list above:)

i started with a 350d 2 years ago, just upgraded to a 450d

its not a real slr unless you can change the lenses, as its the lens that makes the shots, not the body.

you can get 300/350d's on ebay for not much money really, used of course.

If you want killer shots, get a 300/350d 2nd hand on ebay, but the body only, then get a 50mm f1.8 lens (about £50) or a f1.4 would be better but costs more (£180ish)

a 50mm lens f1.8 or f1.4 would be great for most biking shots, of course its a fixed focal length so you'll have to physically move about instead of zooming, but its worth the compromise to get a fast lens for small money, which means you'll get good pictures with a fast shutter speed without having to use the flash, especially in the woods.

If you are serious about your photography, this is a good place to start.  If you want a zoom lens cheap, get the standard 18-55mm, you can pick one up on ebay for about £30 but they are crap lenses.  Ok to start, but you'll soon want a new lens and I promise you'll never use it again when you do.

Canon all the way for slr, in my opinion, if I had the cash I would have a 1D, but i'm plenty happy with my 450d.  And learn to use it properly, I hate it when I see people with expensive slr's on holiday and they have it set on fully automatic.  I could cry

Hope this helps

I use the 400D and sigmas F2.8 lenses for biking shots a 24-70 and a 70-200mm great lenses. I agree about the 50mm lens but you have to get fairkly close for some shots which could be a problem at any races if they are the other side of the track IE. Redhill Extreme which is a wide track. you can pick up a 70-300mm lens on  ebay for about £50-70 also a flash would be handy just for the fill in to see the faces, if your shooting in woods there will be a lot of shadows on the face especially if the have a full face on. I will be upgrading in a few months to an Eos 1D MK3 but the 400D will still come with me every race as it is an excellent camera. Hope this helps

Steve

New Canon on the block the 1000D.

Appears to have been labeled as the best beginner camera around, even passing the Nikon D60 on the scale.
Personally I would not shoot canon however for the beginner camera thread it seems relevant.

7 AF points integrated cleaning and live view do sound pretty tasty.

The buffer depth of only 5 on RAW however does not sound all that great.

Looks like a sweet deal to me?

Sorry but I would have to disagree. If you're planning on taking it further than a few quick snaps during a days ride you would only have to sell the bridge camera and buy a DSLR. It would do all you need to begin with, but you soon find the limitations without much effort. Not being a snob, just being practical! Considering how cheap you can pick up a DSLR now it's frankly daft not to get one.

do you not think as this topic is called THE BEST CAMERAS FOR NEWCOMERS, that its wise to inform people of a range of cameras. nothing at all wrong with my s1000 for a newcomer at all. not every one will be able to afford a dslr .

Title: Re: THE BEST CAMERAS FOR NEWCOMERS
Post by: [Ady] on October 21, 2008, 10:36:52 AM
Exactly how much do you think a dslr costs? There isn't anything wrong with advising newcomers on a range of cameras, I'm simply saying your particular advice (which seems to be based within some kind of anti-establishment bubble) isn't the best.

If were going to take it down further then an old fully manual film slr is by far the best thing to learn photography, and costs absolutely naff all. This is a newcomers to photography topic right? Not a new comers to using a mostly automated camera tricking you into some false sense of control and achievement topic?

I tend to read things before I post them, not after. If your going to give advice using camera snobbery as a foundation you should make sure it's good advice. I'm very sorry we don't see eye to eye.

Title: Re: THE BEST CAMERAS FOR NEWCOMERS
Post by: Jeff_R_King on October 21, 2008, 16:44:57 PM
I can see where you're both coming from, it just depends what a "beginner" wants from a camera. If they just want a camera that'll get them good pictures chances are they don't need a DSLR. However if they're a "beginner" in photography wanting to advance and get technical with loads of settings etc then DSLR is probably what they'll need in the long run.
Like with most things, just cos there's something better out there doesn't mean everyone needs it.

Fuji make some great bridge / prosumer cameras, I have a s9600 myself, it could be better in a few respects, but it does everything I need it to and has served me well for nearly two years.
That doesn't mean I won't get a DSLR in the future, I think I may miss the tilting LCD tho.

that's basically it, sorry i didnt mean it to come across as an argument, i just didnt want my bridge camera advice to be made out to be pointless. i do read through my posts im dyslexic as you can probably tell.

I'm getting my first Dslr for christmas and I've come to the choice of either the Sony alpha 300 or Canon 1000D. I've been to jessops to have a feel adn I liked these two but excluded the Nikon D60 becasue I didn't like the feel of it.

Which lenses can be used for each of them and which one would you reccomend?

I'm in the same situation as you, have a look in Jessops and have a feel of the cameras, I liked the canon 1000d which is £330 on the jessops site with £30 cashback, and also you can order online and pick it up in your local jessops.
