Title: scaphoid Post by: colesie on May 25, 2008, 12:30:30 PM well to cut a long story short i have managed to break my scaphoid, ironically my elbow hurts more because of swelling but oh well, i was just wondering who else has done it and how long it took before they got there cast off
cheers Title: Re: scaphoid Post by: Roo on May 25, 2008, 20:30:17 PM I think there is already a thread or two on this...
I've done mine. The hospital said 6-8 weeks; I went in for an x-ray after 4 weeks but the x-ray room had caught fire so I couldn't have one. They just took the cast off then. Hard man +1. Title: Re: scaphoid Post by: jon T on May 28, 2008, 17:35:53 PM I had a cast on for 8 weeks and now a support. Had four x-ray's at 8 weeks and 3 looked ok, but you could still see fracture in one, so I have to go for a ct scan. Even though it's not the most painful break, I thought it was a sprain, let it heal, as I know someone that carried on riding with it and had to go for an operation where they grafted bone from his hip and that means another 8 weeks recovery. I went to a specialist and he said some people have had casts on for 6 months, but thats worst case scenario. Its got a really poor blood supply to the bone, thats why it takes longer to heal.
Title: Re: scaphoid Post by: jammyroberts on May 30, 2008, 20:48:55 PM i just did mine in at the sda at fort bill,
to make matters worse it was at the top of the course on my first timed run, adrenaline got pumping so i carried on the run making the break worse after crashing again! in answer to your question i've been told its going to take 3 and a half months to heal, which means im missing the mega avalanche and a months riding in france :'( some one advised me on using a powerball or whatever they are called :S apparently they can help reduce the time it takes to heal and makes your wrist/forearm stronger in the process Title: Re: scaphoid Post by: colesie on May 30, 2008, 20:59:50 PM thanks, what is a powerball and do you know where i could get one?
Title: Re: scaphoid Post by: will... on May 30, 2008, 21:28:39 PM the cheapest place ive found is here (http://www.play.com/Gadgets/Gadgets/4-/174948/Powerball-Neon-Blue-Pro/Product.html), you can get the cheaper model but i personally would prefer the little display thing that you get on the more expensive model.
CRC stock them too, in the accessories section Title: Re: scaphoid Post by: jammyroberts on May 31, 2008, 13:30:33 PM yeah i was going to say CRC and i would go for the more expensive one,
when it comes to your body no price is to much :P that sounded a bit weird but oh well ::) Title: Re: scaphoid Post by: stinkystout on June 19, 2008, 21:27:35 PM Unlucky, was at that sda as well. Amazing track to race on. what category u in?
would be surprised if the power ball helped heal it quicker, wouldn't you need to let the bone heal first? Title: Re: scaphoid Post by: Chris. on June 20, 2008, 09:12:11 AM would be surprised if the power ball helped heal it quicker, wouldn't you need to let the bone heal first? I've got on be but as this man said, dont you have to wait for the bone to heal then use it afterwards to get the strenght built back up ? Thats what i think anyway Chris Title: Re: scaphoid Post by: colesie on June 24, 2008, 13:32:42 PM tis 9 weeks for me lads, got another 4 to go
Title: Re: scaphoid Post by: Chris. on June 24, 2008, 19:53:16 PM tis 9 weeks for me lads, got another 4 to go Ouchh man. Im going back to the hospital on thursday to find out if its broke or not. Hope not :-\ Hope your better and riding soon mate. Title: Re: scaphoid Post by: Retro boy on July 02, 2008, 22:58:00 PM Ok..so I busted my scaphoid 9 weeks ago now.
Went back to have it looked at on monday. While it was out of the paster, i was in no pain while moving it about. the doc was poking it and squeezing it and what-not. No pain whatsoever. Now apparantly, its still fooked. Appear odd to anyone? now in in a cast for another 4 weeks! Title: Re: scaphoid Post by: Chris. on July 03, 2008, 16:45:58 PM What im thinking is, Because it was like this with me, When i first got my hand out of a cast for checkover. I could move it freely without it hurting and what not. but after a while it would hurt alot.
Though it may not be the same as my doctor discharged me without even checking if its broke >:( >:( So i could have a broken scaphoid which would now be dead if it is broke. But on a lighter note, My wrist has been fine, Bit clicky but no pain. But maybe that above reason is why you didnt feel any discomfort whilst it was being checked ? Title: Re: scaphoid Post by: Retro boy on July 03, 2008, 19:34:32 PM Im in half a mind weather to cut off the cast! Its causing me that litte grief!
However, I know a physio, and he sais you can risk ruining movement in the wrist if it don't heal properly! Title: Re: scaphoid Post by: jmann1 on July 03, 2008, 20:12:16 PM due to it's size and location the scaphod has a poor blood supply.....
blood, being the transport mechanism for the body will cause ossification (bone growth) by bring calcium and magnesium phospate together.... short story....be patient...it will heal pull the cast off....you WILL break it again....maybe not on a bike, but ANY time you fall onto your wrist Title: Re: scaphoid Post by: downhiller on July 07, 2008, 09:55:13 AM fell off at gethin last august 07 and done my wirst in. thought it was liagment damage so didnt get it x-rayed. still hurting to this day so went and got it checked out, borken scaphoid since august woops. gonna get a bone graph soon but doing the mega first so it can wait. and just got back from fortbill national.
hand man +2 Title: Re: scaphoid Post by: Biglev on July 07, 2008, 10:04:46 AM Let it heal!! i broke mine and after 4 weeks took the cast of to race at aston. taped it up but smashed it to hell. Now it hurts all the time and twice as much in the cold!. I also can bend my hand back very well and i have got some calification issue.
It coudlbe 8 plus weeks until you can really get out. but do wait. Title: Re: scaphoid Post by: Chris. on July 07, 2008, 21:52:53 PM Does it hurt if its broke ?
As i was supost to have broke mine a few weeks ago but the doctor couldnt find a fracture or anything. So just wondering if it will hurt if its broke or would i not be able to move it sertian ways ? Lift/ do heavy things with ease ect... ? Thanks Title: Re: scaphoid Post by: jakey-boy on July 09, 2008, 21:32:12 PM yer it hurts he was in soo much pain when he did it and the other day he was in pain as well
Title: Re: scaphoid Post by: AtePhlatAte on July 09, 2008, 21:50:06 PM it's so anoying when you break a proper small crappy bone and it stops you riding, i broke one of the bones in my hand went riding the next day didn't even think it was broken just thought i'd bruised it, then took a closer look and it looked very dodgy, kept on riding with the pot on aswell :D
Nico Title: Re: scaphoid Post by: Retro boy on July 09, 2008, 22:14:42 PM Its fucks me right off.
I was riding quicker after major surgery on my leg (plate fitted) than a poncy, shitty bone in my wrist! Its the fact it causes me no pain whatsoever thats annoying! Title: Re: scaphoid Post by: baino770 on July 12, 2008, 21:24:56 PM done my scaphoid in, didnt hurt at all when i did it, thought it was sprained left it and continued riding, went to a physio after about 10 weeks because it wasn't getting any better, she said it was f**ked and told me to get an xray, xray showed it was broken went to see a specialist and now on monday i got to have an operation, bone graft from pelvis:| and held together by a pin then im in cast for atleast 6 weeks. Completly f**ked my summer up, if you hurt yourself get it checked out right away, DONT LEAVE IT:@ Tommorow going for my last ride for atleast 6 weeks, pretty depressing;)
