I'm still here but i don't know where our thread went

I think it all needs to be kept about the club on here. All general stuff should come under the general banter.
Perhaps you should post a bit about your club on here and how you join etc.

I think the Kent Riders thread got deleted again, because it was getting long again.

it seems that covert, and us south east riders have all gone really quiet :-\ i think its the long pause without much to talk about between races.

...on a more positive note, i am meeting with our local Kent Community Warden from KCC next week. should be a gud un! all about keeping kids off the streets - we wnt them to ride bikes. Already got DDC and shepway councils on board, all we need now is KCC to round it all off!

Update:

Funding application has been sent to the council a couple o days ago, waiting for that to come back. When it does, we can pay the BC affiliation charges! We also have our constitution drawn up, i'm in the process of sorting out a child protection policy.

New designs for our race tops have been made, i will email them out to peeps when i'm at home, prob 2moro.

I will check it out, I think there is pages of the stuff and I think its direct from B.C.

I haven't had chance yet to speak to Rob Gazzard, the new Recreation

Last night at the Dover District council offices there was a club development forum on working towards clubmark status. Clubmark is run by Sport England, this is their desricption of clubmark:
"Developed by Sport england, Clubmark is a set of national standards for National Governing Bodies of Sport to adopt and their affiliated clubs to meet."

"The scheme accredits and recognises clubs that are committed to providing a safe, effective and child-friendly environment for children & young people."

Myself, hodge, and another dubrider attended this meeting with a view to see good practices with regards to running a sports club. We plan to put some of their practices into our club from the start. This means when we are set up we will already be putting many modern codes of practice into the club.

if you think you're gonna let those prats control us you got another thing coming! We don't actually plan to go for clubmark, but it was good just to go along and see how its done 'properly'. We can take little bits that we like, or that are just plain common sense to put into practice for our club. Got loads of document templates and food so i'm not complaining  ;)

Hows that t.v. coverage going?

we will be getting a camera for the next race we do on 1st May. They dont want too much riding footage, but more of me speaking to the camera. i can't see that working too well  :D It will be good though. I also found out today that we have got

Well I think it is safe to be open about it now, we are planning on coming up to do a training day at Porc towards the end of October hopefully to show you guys how to run them in your area. Also would like to do one in Sheffield in November if Chris gets his club going. ;D

i just read it before my last post, that's why i was a bit annoyed... still am. i hear of these projects happening all around the country (not always on the same scale) in some form or another, and the FC wont even reply to my messages. i think they are a bunch of c***s i'm afraid. one minute they are all frindly, then we get organised, then they dont want to know us. i might just drive to FC hq and have a bit of a lair at em.  >:( >:( >:D >:( >:( grrrr!!

Write and ask them where they are up to and then if you dont get a reply back to the mp. :)

i got a letter back from MP

In the letter FC are saying that we did not turn up for a meeting on the 1st April (what meeting) FC didn't let us know that they where having meeting.

"We have recently learnt of one cyclist being killed and another breaking his neck withing Covert Wood" MY ASS

So i think it's time to go back on to MP to get this salted

It seems to me that everything is getting out of hand here.
Have you affiliated to B.C. yet if not that should be your first thing on list of to do. I think you got the money from the council to do it didnt you?
You have to take things a step at a time not ruffle feathers etc. Once everything is in place that is the time to approach the forestry again. Hope that helps. :)

Did he take the fc to court? maybe he died from his injuries. Its great to see what you are all doing for the sport. Good luck.

Not sure about a death, but someone did break their neck/back there about 6 years ago, crashing out of one of the natural bomb-holes.

cheers man.. it's only taken us over a year just to get this meeting! ah well, all progress is good progress. They have stated that it's only me and Hodge that turn up, i  think they're scared that there will be a huge group of REAL angry mountainbikers armed with pitchforks ready to tear their heads off. Me an the hodgster will make up for lack of numbers with ugly faces and excessive use of long silly words... which i will make up on the day methinks.

Hope it goes well, then I will be able to travel for 20 mins to canterbury, instead of 1 and a bit hours to PORC. Its great to see that people do more than just ride, and actually do things to help others. I would offer to help, but its your thing, and I dont want to mess anything up.

if we get this site as a permenent mtb venue it would be used by a fair percentage of the riders in Kent, and maybe even further afield! cheers for the offer of help loads of peeps have given us support, but it's easier if the crap is sorted by a few peeps not many. When we get all the shiz together we will have free membership and will advertise it widely, so you'll be more than welcome to join in and help out from then! everyone is welcome in dubriders  ;D

Tanks for the kind words everyone  ;D. i fell off on some reall hard roots and then had to wait for 2 riders though, so although i actually had a pretty sweet run it was a crappy time because with the waiting and then someone crashing in front of me i ended up wasting a good minute ahh well, it wa still fun and i got to ride an amazing track :D:D

We had the meeting with FC today. It doesn't look very good because of the local flowers within the wood.

Does anyone know of any FC woods that i can pester them for now we know Barham is a no-no.


The cyclist that was killed was killed cycling on the road which travel through the wood on his way to work and the person that broke his neck left a note to say that he had done so on a tree!

hmmmmm, are these flowers everywhere in the forest or is it possible to pick a track through that wouldnt interfere with the flowers. If not looks like you may be stuffed. Is there anyway they would let you use it as a club just for training days say once a month when the flowers have died off. That is sometimes a way around it.
I dont know how they will stop people riding it anyway. That is the big problem they had here in Exeter. One argument may be that if they could provide you with a track somewhere else then this would encourage other riders not to ride in the SSI woods. Any way you know where I am if I can be of any help. ;D

we are still awaiting for official notes from the meeting.... but they dont know what the flora are, or where in the forest they are, or what percentage of the forest they are in. It is (quite convieniently) going to take 2/3 years to do the neccessary surveys and reports. Until that point it is a no go area. Will let you know more when we can.

Tonight me and Hodge are going to be attending a meeting about the future plans for the Betteshanger project. This is a scheme local to us that is regenerating and old coal tip site/coilery - http://www.betteshangerregeneration.org.uk/intro.asp for more info. Basically they are building lots of cycling facilities and we are going to try and get onboard with our club, just as the East Kent BMX guys are.

i just got a letter from FC confirming that we are not to use Covert woods because of the flora and fauna areas, lets hope that we can work with FC in the near futher at a new place    maybe
this flora and fauna must be a big thing in Kent because i've asked a farmer if we could get a bit of woodland off him, he said he would but because of all the flora and fauna thing he can't, (not even money would make him change his mind)

Did you guys go to the Betteshanger meeting last week? Was much said about the BMX track?

Hey dude, we went to the meeeting indeed. It went quite well, aside from the fact that they only really wanted to talk about the wonderful 2mile road track!  :D the BMX track is defo in there though, they have aready started construction on it hoping it to be of a national standard. I asked about a 4x track saying how there is plenty of space there and our country really needs one. they said they are thinking about it but plan to get an outside group of peeps to make it at a later date. i mention phil saxena's name and they went all bright red but didn't say much. all in all the future is bright, the things they are doing with that centre are awesome, like a nature reserve & educational facilities. oh yeah, they are proud of the big car park too  ;)

Yeah they sure do love their road track - it's *amazing* what you can do with a bit of tarmac!  ::)

We already know a little about the BMX side of things and they took us to visit the site a couple of months ago. There are a few issues with the track, but I can't really go into them here.

If it all goes well then it should be a brilliant facility, all the better if they can be persuaded to build a 4x track too! Do you think they have a problem with Phil Saxena, or were they not really bothered about the idea? It's on a perfect piece of land for it, so I can't see what they have to lose. Malcolm, the VC Deal guy seems pretty keen when it comes to anything involving cycling so he's probably your best route in.

We'll try and drop some extra hints next time we see them.

yeah sweet dude, all good. When i mentioned phil's name, i think they were trying to hide the fact that they have talked to him. I think the idea is to build it after the site is opened. Would be a shame for it to not be included, but as you say Malcom's enthusiasm for other cycling disciplines is quite shocking but amazing all the same! It would be nice to get a trials area put in as well, enabling all types of cyclists to use the site, there won't be many places in the uk that cater for that amount of variety!!

Cool, if they've made contact with Phil S then that's sounds very promising indeed! We'll just have to keep the idea fresh in their minds.

Trials area is a great idea - never thought of that one. There are a hell of a lot of riders around Canterbury way that would make use of it. Could be worth asking Ashton or someone to design a course if it all goes ahead.

we have a stall at a local sports for kids event on Saturday where we can promote cycling and show kids maintenance, other skills etc. We are hoping to have a raffle and promote Dubriders to gain some future members possibly

Are you sorted for this weekend then. There is a couple of books in the kit bag and it tells you exactly how to run gears 1 and 2 its great fun with the kids, no good if they are experienced downhillers but your everyday kids love it. SHHHHH some of the downhill kids enjoy it as well.

we are going to do the skills test, coach them in the morning then get them to do it whilst being timed

Thats what we did with the deaf guys it was great fun, we are taking them to the BMX on Wednesday. ;D

I've got 2 bikes off the Police and we can get more when they become available.

Even though we only had 2 bikes i've never seen so many kids wanting to ride them. It was as if they have never seen a bike before. It was good fun and we got them to go under a limbo and a bunny hop comp.

Im glad your finding the Go Ride fun, we certainly are. Its working well as B.C. are leaving us alone and there is no interference by the club development officer. Just how we like it ;D
I think its a good way of getting young riders involved with downhill and giving them a natural progression. I dont think any of us realised the value of the skills that Go Ride provide, it all looks silly nonsense untill you deliver it.
I do hope that more downhill clubs will go down this route. What benefits have you found?

for starters having the kit bag is sweet, so is 50 free BC memberships - benifits of that debatable. We have not really done any coaching sessions yet, so advantages of go-ride have not yet been realised. We got 2 photos in the local rag about our club from passport to sport. As Hodge said, it was unreal to see so many kids have fun on bikes riding round cones. i thought it would never happen!! Our club development officer is a sweet dude, i've known him for a while now so there's no problems there.

I notice your club is not on the Go Ride web site if you havnt written your blurb you want to get it done and get your club on their.

jolly good, we ran talent testing at the Race Face yesterday and had some very good results. Might be something for you to think about running at Porc if you have enough room, if you dont have enough room have  a think about running Go Ride their for the younger non racing riders. ;D

it's all starting to happpen - it is indeed. our future clubhouse now has fresh electrics throughout, just waiting for the refurbishment to finish. then i can go shopping and buy lots and lots of shiny new tools and bits. membership forms are nearly done, new site is nearly done! oh yeah, ITV approached me, they want to do a tv piece on dubriders, so if anyone's free on 1st nov at 13:00 be at sandy lanes.

Dubriders were approached by the BBC to apply to be contestants on Bargain Hunt as they are having a theme of powerless travel.

Myself and Gump went for an audition and got in! We are going head to head with 'gentlemen cyclists'.

I'll keep you posted as to when it's on the telly so you can all watch.

hello, are you ever planning on rebuilding Barham? or is it a no go due to the forestry commission?

we would love to re-biuld barham, that is our no. 1 goal really, but it is indeed a no-go due to the forestry Commission. Apparantly there is wild flora that is protected growing in the woods at Covert so we are unable to ride there.

Used to ride at Barham many many years ago. Got back into riding about a year ago and bit sad to see it all totalled when I went back there last summer. There was some shonky shore stuff there which I'm guessing the FC flipped over.

Been back a lot recently as I live near Canterbury and most trails are now clear. Someone had rebuilt some of the jumps there about 2 months ago but any with logs in have been dismantled and someone's taken supporting logs from all the small berms.

The trail on the side of the old MX track (directly opposite most of the tracks) has recently been cleared.

Anyway.... just found this thread so now understand why it's all the way it is. It's a shame as the place has tonnes of potential. Looks like you guys have been putting in a lot of effort with the FC.


Are there any other good spots in the area? Heard of some trails over towards Herne Bay? Any tips on locations would be cool.

Go to Perry Woods a lot as it's just up the road. That's pretty fun and I helped clear some of the old overgrown & forgotten back trails around there a while back but it's pretty small really. Idiots dropping s**t everywhere, spray painting and cutting down trees needlessly doesn't do anyone any favours.

Going to Canterbury tomorrow to do the second part of Bargain Hunt!!!! ;D
