Title: Why do some hubs have one flange bigger than the other?
Post by: _tom_ on December 22, 2005, 20:04:50 PM
I decided I'm gonna get a new hub as mine seems pretty much f**ked. I was set on getting a dmr revolver but the flanges are different sizes, why is that? Does it make the wheel any different to put together? I've only had experience with bmx wheels in the past.

Cheers for any help

some hubs have a larger flange on the disk side as this make a stiffer wheel for braking

i larger flange makes a stronger wheel build because the spoked are shorter but obviously the larger the flange the heavier the hub

So does that mean one side of the wheel uses slightly shorter spokes? That seems like a hassle..

yes it does and 1 side of a wheel is usually shorter spokes because every diskhub  wheel is dished over

The majority of rear wheel builds will need shorter drive-side spokes so it's no more hassle at all.

I should've mentioned its for a front hub  :P I guess I'll just get a regular hub, this seems like an annoyance

quite often on the rear, the idea of having differant sized flanges is so the spokes needed are the same length for each side. the differant flange sizes take into account the dishing of the wheel, so you dont need two differant spoke lengths for one wheel.
on the front if its a disc hub, the disc side flange needs to be larger so theres room for the mount. on a non disc hub, obviously both sides are the same.

Whys that? Planning on using the old spokes? It's no more difficult to build.

just get new spokes you might not have the right size anyway and keep the two lengths split up

hmm ok I was planning on just using the old spokes coz I'm cheap  :P So how am I meant to know what length spokes I need? I have a mavic d521 rim and will be getting a dmr revolver, 32h.

Spoke calcualation uses a complicated formular. Lets just say unless your swapping a hub for itslef there is no gaurentee that the spokes will be correct. Your best off talking to the wheel builder at you LBS and buying the correct length spoke.

My LBS doesnt even have a wheel builder  :( Its probably easier for me to get a cheap wheel after xmas when people get new stuff :P

Or order one from stif.co.uk or merlincycles.co.uk There wheels are wel built and resonably priced

wheel calculation is no problem at all using the dt wheel building chart.
if you get a new hub it may be the case that you'll need new spokes anyway and its probably best in the long run.
