I think most of us already suspected this, but check it out anyway:

Food for thought when your choosing your next camera huh! Although they were printed on the same size paper, if you were going larger then the mega pixels would come into play. (?)

Interesting find Greg, people are rarely going to want to blow up the photos larger than that anyway!

yeah thats the thing really, jessops always sell you way too much camera, like do your parents need a 10mp compact, when actually you never need more that 3mp - as thats fine for looking on screen, emails, and printing up to 7x5, and how many people do holiday snaps bigger than that? most people print 6x4!

Its crazy stuff, although camera companies would go bust if they didnt bring out newer models and keep creating a "need" to upgrade, so you can't blame them.

i've seen stunning photographs taken on a d30 (3mp canon dslr) blown up to A0.

whats far more important is something called pixel pitch( ie how close together the sensors are), if you cram 10 million pixels on a tiny little chip quality the quality will be far less than 6 million pixels on a bigger sensor.

the other huge factor that isn't considered by a lot of people is lens quality. put a s**t bit of glass on the front of your shiny new DSLR and it'll produce s**t results.

They didn't mention that larger Mega Pixels without a larger sensor often causes more noise (graininess), especially in low light.

If someone says they have a new camera or are looking at a new camera I always ask what optical zoom its got before I ask about Mega Pixels.

it wont be untill you go past A3 when you would see a decline in quality!

Always exceptions to any rule just like when you check out photos from a Canon 1d mark I against another 4megapixel camera, difference between them!  now check it out against a new age 7 megapixel P&S still difference! Smiley

All about pixel pitch and the sensor technology itself of course, just common sense Tongue

I saw some lab tests a little while back at ST Microelectronics (who make the CMOS's for camera phones etc.) on the CMOS sensors and it was interesting at least to see the tests... but realistically there's only so much a sensor that tiny can do

At work we use a variety of D2Hs and D2Xs (and others, 1DS etc.), the D2Hs having a 4 megapixel JFET LBCAST sensor and the D2X using a 12.4 megapixel CMOS. Realistically, they both dump out very similar pictures, but the D2H has the added advantage of having smaller files to work with, which is a huge bonus when doing a lot of post-pro

CMOS on camera phones? CMOS are only featured on the higher level Canon DSLR's, from the 30D up.

http://www.instat.com/press.asp?ID=1772&sku=IN0602968MI

Vast majority of camera phones use CMOS sensors, although you only see them in mid-high range DSLRs, their use in scientific applications and very small sensor cameras are extremely widespread over CCDs (they are more common in camera phones and smaller cameras primarily due to their lower power consumption over CCDs).

CCDs are only more common in the other full size stills cameras and camcorders

Interesting, but I don't believe the story - only 1 person did it correctly?? Surely, by the law of averages, 1 in 6 people should get that right, just by guessing! there are only 6 possible order combinations with 3 images. Dubious, to say the least!

I do think the idea has some merit though - I'm going for the EOS 1d I think because of the frame rates, I'm not too worried about the low MP value - I've seen some shots with it and it looks crisp enough for my use!
