is there any effect you can get to make the footage look like it was shot in them big cameras they use in films like roam ..cant mind what there called

Yes, buy a big camera...

If you could convert all cheapo formats into film, do you really think they would bother with the hassle and expense of film?

You can buy software to convert video into more of a film esque look, but it is expensive and still does not look quite right.

The closest you might get with basic techniques is to increase the contrast, and maybe up the saturation, but it might just look weird.

The quickest and easiest way to make a domestic camera look half decent is to "deinterlace" the footage in whatever program you use to edit.
It will make the footage look a bit more grainy and take the home video edge off it.
