My First Night ride
« on: January 08, 2007, 14:01:32 PM »

hi,
After finishing my second bike after Christmas (something to save the DH bike)
I Decided to go to my lbs as i knew they go for a weekly ride on Thursdays.
So i asked them if i could go along, and so i put my cat eyes on my hardtail and i was good to go!!
We all met in the town i lived and biked along the road to a local quarry in the pitch black!
They had been there before and were all pretty friendly.
The pace i had expected to be quicker on the roads but infact it was just right.
We rode the quarry trails for about a hour before returning home
Oh my God!!
How much fun was it bombing down somewhere with just a light to guide you!
It made it more of a challenge as you could not see everything and therefore made it easier to practice technique. As a few things were unexpected.
I dare say that it would have been not so good in the day as it would be a walk in the park.

Everything was so much fun apart from getting shot at by some chav with a BB gun on the way home!
I'm now going next week too! Also help with keeping fitness up as well  Tongue
(sorry if i bored you)

sounds fun, was not being able to see anything a bit risky or was it quite an open track?

yeah i go on at least a night right a week its awsome I find i have little or no balance. I ride where the local Marine base train so tis rather amusing riding through thick woods only to come across a bush moving across the trail!

Yeah night riding in fog and rain is quite possibly the worst conditions to ride in EVER! improves your skills so much.

Aston Hill Night Race a few years ago!  Now the tracks there may not be the most awesome DH tracks in the world, but switch the daylight off and turn the lamps on down the black run in a thunder storm and you've got some of the most intense DH ive ever done!

Great fun, i just wish i'd been a little more DH experienced when i went, cos it would have made me a 100% better rider that's for sure!  Can't wait to do some more night time DH in the near future.

darkness makes simple trails more challenging. you have to be much more precise. i find it harder to pump the ground too as you cant see whats coming.

decent size drops/flyoffs are fun in the dark - it feels like you are launching into a black abyss!

go find some shore too. top fun and less scary as you cant see the ground

i only have cateye 230`s with a different battery than standard. lasts about 2 hrs and all for less than £60. bargain! i also have a spare battery i take on longer jaunts. just dont leave em on full blast all the time.

Yeah night riding is always fun, I fine a full moon and no cloud is helpful so you get better idea of your surroundings. I always think it would be cool to wire up a switch on the brake level to make a rear light into a brake light.
