Whatever their reasons, there's clearly a lot to be learnt by riding chainless..

(well, for me anyway haha!)

I went ten seconds quicker with a chain, indicating that I do not harness the power of the pump to get that little extra speed out of my bike under normal circumstances, and that I brake too much and rely on pedalling to make up for it.  Embarrassed         Either that, or I was having a bad run and the fact that my elbow pads had falled down to my wrists was putting me off! haha!

So for me, and anyone like me, the chainless races should result in a more fluid rider who relies less on their chain to regain speed and more on their skills to maintain speed.

To be honest i think its quite a good idea.

well at first i didnt but now i do.

it gives you a idea of how your category is riding without a race run

its also a bit of fun and you learn where you can find new lines and pumpp

only 3 seconds quicker with a chain on Wink

I didn't think it was a good idea. I think chainless races are fun but it shouldn't be used as a seeding run. I think all day practice would have been alot better. Or if a seeding run was to be used it should be with a chain. I think that it should have been all day practice and then 30 mins - 1 hour of chainless fun racing.

But that just my opinion.

I think it's a good idea, sounds like a laugh.  However, I'm not sure about it at mountain ash, is it even possible to get through that middle section without pedalling?  Maybe they should abort that section and let you roll down the fireroad instead, then drop in by the stream where it goes back into the woods?

It's well mint fun, and don't worry about trying to pedal by accident, you honestly wont.

OOps!
Tell that to the people I saw trying to pedal out of that sweeping right hand turn down the straight to where track has two lines into left hander!(notably one of the RAM guys! Grin)

Extremely funny watching them trying to pedal the bike to get it upright, then watching as they realised there was no chain!Cue lots of stem riding moments!

And the old crowd favourite........."pedal you puff!"........................ never got tired of hearing that one..........much! Grin

Some smart arse shouted that at me on a chainless run once. I stopped, offered them the bike and suggested they could pedal. Oddly enough they looked sheepish and didn't reply... I think I made my point Cheesy

only if its raining or the track is muddy.

tbh learn to pump. i'm up there tonight and will report how EASY it is to pump the whole middle bit.
will have a semi slick high roller rear and a 2.35 mobster up front though

petes right it is easy to pump the middle section, you know the bit that ruins you if you pedal through it

i managed it and i have the skill of a beached whale........its worth doing on a race run as you save the legs for the open section at the bottom.

my only worry is stalling on the long straight cos i havnt got the balls to hit the sketchy right hander at the bottom of the chute without braking

IIRC that chute is very slightly downhill Jimmi, so you shouldn't stall... and even if you brake for the chute (which I do too!) you won't brake to *that* low a speed, will you  Wink

have you seen my times?  Tongue

i think your right the straight is slightly downhill after the kicker but before that it has a slight incline............my bike weighs more than me which is the problem but i shall give it a go on saturday and see

did it chainless today from the rock slab and well from there down its easy. accross the fireroad to the stream crossing is easy. 1/2 way from the stream to where you exit the trees before the final bottom section i lost alot of speed. then the whole bottom section is easy chainless.
so all those who thenk they can't or won't man up

I imagine i'm going to have to get off and sprint the bit as you come out of the trees!

Going up there tomorrow, we'll see.
