You don't really save that much on componets to be honest-i had a look for XTR cranks, and they still seem to be cheaper, or a similar price to CRC.
Frames and forks are th eway to go. But some shops won't ship certain parts to the UK, as they have been instructed by the manufacturers- although this may have changed now-but I remember seeing on BeyondBikes that they wouldn't ship fox forks to the UK. there are ways of getting round this though, there are companies who will provide you with a US postal address and then reship your parts to the UK.
I'm not saying i'm against buying from the US, I got my rail, and some TLD, like pants and helmets and stuff from the uber cheap. it's just sometimes it's only slightly cheaper, and takes a bit of time.
Remember you gotta pay VAT and tax in most cases too. Helmets are an exception.
but if you're gonna do it-now is the time!
Also check out the blow-outs they are bargains!

You say that safety gear is VAT free, but does race jerseys and padded shorts etc count as safety gear?

beyondbikes were good when i got mine, postage was free, and it was shipped UPS priority or 48, whatever its called, so got here in 3 days after it has passed through customs etc. No only helmets, i don't think jersyes and shorts are vat free-but armour may be?
or ebay could be another option?

i bought a set of 2007 juicy 7 brakes (203mm rotors) and a Ultegra cassette for £160 recorded and insured to the UK. thought that was an alright saving.

in the UK

£230 ish for the brakes
£35 for the cassette

if i dont get done on import tax then thats a £100 saving, if i do then fair enough. will still save money.

BTO will only sell the MX SE lids, not the daytonas (D2s).
Declaring stuff as gifts is dodgy as well. If either countries tax/custom people find out there is a big fine waiting both parties. Also as far as i knew, the limit was £50, meaning that's all it can be insured for, so if your brand new IH Sunday gets broken or stolen in transit, you'd only get £50 for it, if it's valued at more than tht on insurance, customs are gonna ask questions...but i  may be wrong.
At the end of the day custom's and VAT's there to be paid, you still save though.
