Fainted on the bike
« on: July 09, 2007, 23:45:05 PM »

This happend a while back, but wasn't to aware of the forum then but i'll tell you the tale.

Went for a day up at inners with my mate and we got there and pushed right up to the road gap to hit make or brake. As we got to the top i felt sick and dizzy. I said to my mate " ill go behind cos i'm feeling weird " So, off we go we go over the last double thing, just before you come out the tunnel onto the freeride and i just got a huge headrush, started breathing rlly heavily and slammed on the back brake and pretty much fainted. Next thing i knew i woke up ( like i would wake up from a sleep ), felt like id been out for ages but it was about 20 seconds, my mate had actually gone down the freeride park but luckily someone stopped to help me. I wasnt injured, just a really, really big fright. So i took a rest, my mate finnaly comes back up and i tell him the story. I decide to take the fireroad back down. I had a can of redbull and a sandwich and i felt fine afterwards but kept easy for the rest of the day. I still had it checked out, the doctor ( my dad ) said it was probarbly due to lack of sugar in the blood or something because i hadn't actually eaten any breakfast that morning. So everyone should be aware to eat something before you go riding as the turnout could have been alot worse, this ever happened to anyone before ?

yer mate, just a lack of sugar.
had a diabetic mate who fainted quite alot due to because he hadn't eaten enough.
i feel wierd sometimes when not eaten much, but nothing as bad as fainting.

yea, low mineral levels will do that to ya! not the same but i used to faint when going for a pee in the morning. mix of low blood sugar, getting up too quickly and a shock to the body by loosing so much fluid (only happened on a long pee lol)

get yourself some high energy food to eat at the top of a trail (things like oats, supplement bars etc)

You just had a spell of hypoglycemia- you'l get much better advise searching that rather than low blood sugar etc. but basically complex carbs.

Energy bars etc. will shoot your sugar up but it'l drop again unless you have a rest afterwards.
Did you have any tests done at the doctors....?
Not to alarm you but its quite rare to actually pass out from low blood sugar unless your diabetic.
If you feel faint quite often you might have some sort of trouble storing glycogen.

Its unlikely to be anything as "serious" as diabetes as you'd have high blood sugar and be dehydrated all the time not low but it might be worth giving the doctor a bottle of your finest to test.

If its never happened before and you dont feel "low" often its just a case of sorting out your diet.
Longer acting higher carbohdrate foods not quick acting high sugar foods.

It hasn't happened again, the incident was a good 7 months ago. I watch what i do and eat before i go on the bike now, do you still advise to get a urine test anyway ?

I got a urine test some months back and the doc said "yep, its definetly urine..."   Grin

Alwyas feel a bit brainfkd and vague after riding when its hot, but this is probably due to dehydration more than anything...
