Dodgy knee
« on: July 19, 2007, 23:46:41 PM »

I twisted my knee while ski-ing in January, which hurt like buggery to walk on but i could still ski. It was painfull for about 2 weeks afterward and i have just had occasional twinges ever since. But while i was out riding tonight it got worse and worse to the point that i now can't even turn the peddals.  All the pain is around the top of my kneecap.

Anyone have any idea what it could be? I'll go to the doc's tomorrow but it could be weeks before i get an appointment for a scan/x-ray.

I have been riding between 15-20 miles 5 times a week for about 6 months now, so my legs are the size of small trees. Definately don't think it is down to week mustles, more likely a reoccurence of the old ski-ing injury.  Going to get it looked at in the hospital tonight, can't wait weeks for a doctors refural. Last time i had to wait 7 weeks for an ultrasound!

It's really weird. I had 2 days of no riding where it hurt like hell and could only just drive, then 2 days later rode to work, then 10 miles after work. So i have gone from practically crippled to perfectly ok in 3 days! I have done 5 20 mile rides since then. Now dosn't hurt at all, so it must be something loose in there, maybe chipped bone or cartaledge. If it were anything else it would hurt for longer, wouldn't it? I didn't get it looked at so as it dosn't hurt at the moment, i will book an x-ray appointment through my GP and find out what is going on in there.

Cheers,

Andy.

Will do. Probably have to wait another 6 weeks again. Feels completely normal at the moment apart from the occasional twinge. Riding home today i thought OH god, not again, then 2 minutes later it went again. Very strange.

Bike Jumps- i never really answered your question. No it didn't give way, i am assuming you are implying a muscle or tendon injury. The muscle strength was still there. When standing still it didn't hurt at all, just when i bent it or tried squatting, although i could still squat the pain was unbarable. Also when sitting down and i lifted my leg off the floor, like every time i changed gear! Last Friday was a very long day!

Cheers,

Andy.

No, anti clockwise. Was going to jump a big mound of snow between 2 trees, but saw at the last second that there was 2 step downs and i wasn't going fast enough to clear them, so slammed the brakes on and caught the left tip, which span me round. It hurt like a bitch, and had to lay in the snow for about 10 minutes before i could get up again. Still skied the rest of the week though Grin

Back to the old-school!

My knees are still slightly dodgy, not through an accident or anything, but the Doc reckoned that my 'front' quads (Don't know their technical name) were much stronger than the rear ones.

As a result, they were pulling my knee-caps off-centre (to the outside of my leg, IIRC).  Luckily my bro-in-Law's a physio, so he recommended various excersises to strengthen the rear quads.

An X-ray or a visit to your |GP will be pointless.

Damage is likely to be ligament or cartalidge. You need to get a referral to see a knee specialist or even a sports physio.

A twisting injury normally torn cart or worst case an ACL tear... if it is an ACL rupture you'd have lost some stability. Do you play football or the like? That'll soon tell you if your ACL is damaged.

Good luck. Hopefully a bit of physio can sort it out.

It's been ok for weeks now so i still havn't got it looked at yet. Definately not ACL because surely that would hurt all the time? There is no loss of stability, apart from when i am peddling realy hard up hill and the kneecap feels like it moves laterally slightely. I think i will have to pay a visit to my ostiopath soon as i have been having quite a lot of upper back pain lately, so i will get him to check me knee out at the same time.

Cheers,

Andy.
