« on: July 20, 2007, 12:14:06 PM »

Does anyone know what the finish on totems actually is? Sram call it Galvanized but I doubt it is

Mine are starting to look a bit tatty from uplifts so i was thinking of giving them a bit of a tidy up Wink

I don't think you will be able to do anything to them because as far as I understand they have been electroplated with a form of chromium which is like the equivalent of galvanising steel but with a magnesium alloy. But they may have been anodized but again I don't think this process is that straight forward with a magnesium alloy either.

I'm not sure about this but I thought I read somewhere that magnesium needs to be coated with chromium or be anodized before you paint it. But I'm not 100% on that.

well al boxxer lowers are painted and there magnesium. i don't see why that would need to be anodized or plated etc,you only galvanize car's to prevent oxodisation.

iirc you cant anodize magnesium alloy. im sure someone tried it and the lowers pitted badly and well screwed them up etc

just paint them Cheesy
