'Skipping' rear hub? Please help!
« on: July 21, 2007, 19:47:15 PM »

Hey guys,

There's something quite annoying happening with my bike. I've just converted it to single speed, using a cog and spacers to replace the cassette, and a chain tensioner.

All appeared to be well until I tried to put the power down on the pedals. When I really crank the bike there's a sudden 'skip' in the cranks, as if I've just missed a gear... only thing is theres only one gear! When I'm just taking it easy it pedals fine, but when a bit of power is applied I get the 'skip'.

The chain is brand new today. I have shortened it, but all the links are solid and move freely. I suspect it's something to do with the hub? The tensioner is also brand new, as is the cog.

The hub is a standard OEM Shimano affair.

Any help appreciated guys.

hmm, chain line good? chain on right way up? [sounds stupid but I used a halflink chain that had to be used a certain way up]

Hub was fine before yeah? I hear that shimano freehubs are quite hardy, but of course this one was cheap!

Chainline is pretty spot on, and I wasn't aware chains had a right way and wrong way. It's just a standard SRAM 9 spd. Shall check however.

Are you using the right speed chain for your single speed cog? Also it might be due to a stiff link?

i had exactly the same problem....mine was a worn cog at the back, I bought a new one and now it is perfect. Is the cog compatible with the chain?? Some of the supplied cogs that come with the single speed kit dont work very well with different types of chain. Try a new sram or shimano one.

Even the slightest wear on the sprocket will result in it jumping when a new chain is put on. Check your front sprocket for wear aswell.... pretty sure that would not affect it but its worth checking.

If thats not the case it could be the hub.... good luck Smiley

sounds like your freehub is on the way out. if that is this case its only going to get worse.

how slack is your chain? this happened to me when i didn't take enough links out of the chain and the chain was skipping off the rear cog. you may just need to take a couple links out of your chain.

is your tensioner tensionin up or down ? does it pull into the chain stay or away

ideally you want it pulling towards the chainstay

ie has the chain got a good enough wrap round the cog
