Quote
There are many urban legends about the proper and effective method to remove a tick. One legend states that something hot (cigarette; burnt match) should be applied to the back of the tick, which causes the tick to remove its head from the victim. It further states that ticks "screw" their heads into their victims; therefore, one must "unscrew" the head. These legends are incorrect and potentially dangerous because if a tick is disturbed it may regurgitate its stomach contents into the host including the agents of tick borne disease if the tick is infected

Just had a read on how to get rid of them...apparently you're not meant to try and burn them off in any way, all the sites say to use tweezers and just pull them out by the head without twisting it or pulling from side to side as you yank it out.

It says to swab the bite with surgical spirits after that, but says the above way is the only way of doing it, otherwise you might stimulate the tick to basically spit back into you. Bleurgh  Tongue

YOu can get s pecial tool from camping shop for about £5. You just need to make sure you get the head out otherwise you will get an infection. Either that or use some front line combo  on the back of your neck Cheesy

The method my mum taught me was to put some greasy stuff on em (like Germaline or Vasaline) and put a plaster over the top and they suffocate with about 12hours and then they come out easy. This works since they breathe through they're skin, so you have to cover em well. We used to get quite a few when we kept goats in Dorset.

Way Ive been taught is spirits (eg vodka) Get a lid full and cover the tick in it (holding the cap over it) thus covering it for a couple of minutes. Then remove the cap and pull the tick out. It relaxes it so it comes out easily.
