proposed SX build
« on: July 26, 2007, 18:31:59 PM »

I will be planning on using it for DH and FR kinda stuff at places such as Haldon, Cann woods and Tavi. i am planning on a lightish build aswell.

frame                 sx trail
forks                 66 sl 1 ata
cranks                 hones/saints undesided, but the hones on my HT have done really well.
chain device          e.13 sts urban 36t
casette                 shimano roady cassette
chainstay protector lizard skin
mech                  sram x.7/tiagra
shifter                  x.7/according shimano shifter
stem                  thomson x4
bars                  easton ea50
tryes                  highrollers
brakes                  avid juicy 7/saint/formula (don't know much about them)/Hayes 9 - I am please with the set on my HT and they are fairly cheap. i would want 8"front, 7" rear.
seat                  dmr
seat post    with frame - thomson
seat clamp      with frame
headset                   R/F diabulous
pedals                  gusset slim jims
grips                  odi lockons - lizard skin northshores

I am going to try and push the shop to sell this for £2000, however i want to build it myself so there won't really be labour to account for, the only things i'll have done is the frame faced up if needs be and the headset fitted. oh and i  will probaly use the wheels off my msisle for the time being (729 on pro 2 front, 721 on pro 2 rear), but later buy some ex721's on pro 2's for it. If i do go ahead and get it, you probaly won't see it for a couple months as i still need to gather more funds together, and will have to make my mind up on the final spec and discuss it with the shop.

Any advise at all will totally be appreciated.

if your talking about formula oros then definatly go for them over the juicys! the levers are soo much nicer as they have shorter blacdes that are designed for one finger braking, they are also really powerful brakes. i would go for them as after owning the juicys and the oros from new, the oros were definatly the better of the two.

Sounds pretty good to me. I'm not gonna try and convince you to get Hope brakes, as you won't listen. but I'd get 66RC2Xs over the ATAs.

the wheels off my msisle for the time being (729 on pro 2 front, 721 on pro 2 rear), but later buy some ex721's on pro 2's for it.
Why? Waste of money just for a marginally lighter rim...

In time,i would want to have the msilse up and running, so i''l put the *old* wheels back on the msilse and put the new ones on the SX, however if i go to france i will probaly put the 729 back on the front, just for that extra bit of strength.

i really like the looks of the formula oro k18's - they seem to be in my budget, what the difference between the 18's and the 24's. Can anyone else recommend them or uses them?

cheers for your help so far lads.

If you're buying an SRS/STS, make sure you get the 'wide' backplate for it (see the E-13 site for details) as you can't fit the guide to an SX trail without it. I tried and failed to fit the standard guide last summer, and it can't be done- I ended up having to buy the wider backplate before I got anywhere. Make sure you have plenty of spacers handy too, you need to wedge that badboy out a fair way!

any cheapish pedals anyone can recommend? sub £50

i am torn between the forks, the sl ata's are light and have more adjustability but the Rc2x etas are 400g's heavier but less to go wrong.

Also would it be ok to run 180mm on the sx, i know that the 06/07 66 are a lot shorter than previous years, so it should be ok?

The SX trail is warrantied upto 180mm DC. I've run boxxers and dorados on mine with no issues.

Chain device wise, the non-ISCG type 3 MRP is a better bet. No fit issues whatsover. slots straight on with a chainline that you choose, not that your bike chooses.

Don't even try and use the ISCG mounts on the SX, they're in the wrong place. The extra travel over the enduro moves the chainstay into the way of the lower guide.

I'd go for cranks with pedal eyelet inserts over XTs. I have seen the threads removed by a friend and his Burgtecs, and he was careful!

There's no discernable strength difference between 721s and 729s on a good wheelbuild, just tyre profile differences. Putting a 729 on the rear would harm the incredibly flickable nature of the bike though. Keep it lively, go lightweight on the wheels.

A midcage mech would mean you could put a mountain cassette on if you wanted to use your bike for anything other than downhill.

The frames come with a chainstay protector, although it's a good idea to put on on the seatstay too.

Fork wise, i'd think very carefully before buying the ATAs, there are a few horror stories going round.
