Help me build my bike!
« on: July 26, 2007, 21:12:02 PM »

Argh,

There seems to have been an influx of threads like these lately, really annoying. Its not just "what brakes should i go for?" or "what forks should i buy" its simply a thread stating "i am getting xxx frame, what parts should i get?" or "what should i buy next for my bike to make it better / lighter/ stronger?"

They are just getting super dull now, everyone pretty much knows which parts are the best, things like wheels (ex721 on pro2) and brakes (juicy 5)are so obvious. The rest is pretty much all personal preference anyway.

What about some form of thread which is somehow enabled to stick at the top of the forum for a prolonged period of time listing the best parts to go for when building a bike? i.e. "if you are unable to make a decision on what to buy yourself then look here"

You will still get those kind of threads though. The majority are from newer members to the sport and generally they dont wouldnt look at the top for a thread like you mentioned. It might stop some but not all of them. There is always going to be some people who want to know what to put on there new bike.

Yes true, but there doesnt seem to be any purpose to it though. Its never specific questions that actually require a bit of thought to answer, its simply "what should i buy?"

dave you forget this forum isnt to serve people who have been here years... its mainly the new people... and without new people forums die.

but there should probobly be a faq section with the most asked question which you can submit your own to, that'd be a good idea. but chances are people wont read it.

Me thinks its part of the mbuk merger losing alot of its active members. For anyone how had used the old mbuk more than every other thread was of the "what should I buy" genre.

Simply if these threads annoy you don't post and they will go away quicker Wink

It serves everyone that uses it, that aint the point though.

The point is, if there was a some form of thread which is somehow enabled to stick at the top of the forum for a prolonged period of time listing the best parts to go for when building a bike, then im sure some of these threads would dissapear.

I see what you're saying but the longer you are a regular member the more you will see this and especially lately with the demise of the MBUK forum the groms are wandering through cyberspace aimlessly until they prey upon other forums, namely us.

So instead of posting posts complaining about how many groms are posting new comments, hit the "Report to mod" button and we can act apprpriately Wink Eventually they will get bored and go away.

On the other hand everyone has to start somewhere and we were all first time riders once.

Im not sure whether the majority of the posts are made by younguns though. Alot of the ones ive seen in recent weeks look like they have been written by people who have a good grasp of the english language.

I dunno, i just think a sticky with recommended parts in it could be a good idea, its just gets really dull cos the same answers are posted in every thread;

Mavic721 on pro2
Avid Juicy
Rockshox pike

etc

Anyway, ive finished my ranting and raving (cant remember the rave though), ill call it a night.

Sorry but am I missing something here, this is a bike related forum with a specific board for Kit and Equipment.

What are people supposed to post questions about in that board other than about bike kit?

Inevitably people are going to buy new frames and have doubts about componentry and are going to want opinions on build spec. I think these make for quite interesting reads to be fair.

My 50 pence.

Its is fine to ask questions, but not when there are 3 similar posts on the first page of the same board. Report dups and we'll merge/delete (posting a link to the original helps us too Wink). Also, if these types of topics bug you, ignore them, don't post. They will die away and we'll purge them eventually too.

To those that feel the need to post these types of threads, do yourself a favour... use the search, read the forum for a bit and if you do post, post in a nice clear and well constructed post that isn't just "Shall I get X or Y". You are more likely to get help that way and less likely to piss off the people you want help from.

its good to read/hear what works or what sucks from different people who have had first hand experience and not just going off hearsay of course but in the end you usually make your own choices about what you use after trying things out.. or something, unless you dont

search before you post you noobeez (newbies)

Indeed, but by reading the forum they will find threads answering 90% of the current " what shall I get" threads. All we are asking is people look about and stop being so damned lazy (and learn to read in some cases too).
