tbh a boot rack style one against the back window/roof or a roof rack resting on the rain gutters would be your best bet.

Thats good to know actually, as I can see in my mind my first car being a shockingly small hatchback. Im thinking one bike in the car, two on the rear bike rack and two of the roof rack

bike racks are rather good inventions!
having said that though, it can ruin the back of your car, theres a large dent in the back of our audi a6, which isnt ideal, and the clips CAN take bits of paint off if your not too careful, but the rack keeps the mud out of the car for the way home

best i have done so far is 3 dh bikes 3 pepole all our gear could have easy got another bike and kit in, rover 200 wooooooop.

We got 4 people, 3 hardtails, 1 bmx and a tonne of kit n general crap in my 206 once when people needed a lift back from the trails.

There was so little space that everyone except me was still wearing their piss pots which got some funny looks from pedestrians and other road users.
