Talk To Frank - I'm addicted to adrenaline!
|
3 weeks ago I dislocated my shoulder badly and broke a bone in the joint. I was in the middle of know where so I got a few random heads to yank it back in, this took over 10mins of yanking and docs said this is what broke the bone! Doh! I don't know whether to have surgery??? I have read articles of people getting back on there bike and it popping out again. After 3 weeks I have still got very little movement in the arm, unreal amounts of pain and still a fair bit of swelling! I am going to europe riding for the summer next year, I am jacking in my job where I have been for 5 yrs and goin to ride some gnarly ass s**t! I have heard that surgery is the only way to make the shoulder reliable again. I would be gutted if I quit my Job and went to France dislocated it again in the first week and was fooked for ages. Check you tube video of unprofessional shoulder relocation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIZHJp309wc

I had dislocated mine 5 times before getting it repaired on the NHS!! Mine dislocated badly a couple of times to the point where I had to be knocked out and have it put back in on the operating table. I can recommend the surgrey. However I had done mine 3 times before the NHS even considered giving me physio which by that time it was fecked! I dislocated mine once just diving into a swimming pool, once it got into a certain postion it just pops out. I was off college for about a month having the op. Remember chicks dig scars!

Right.... i have a bit of info for you on this one....
I started off with pretty sound shoulders, a couple of bad crashes, and what they call 'subluxations' - where the shoulder pops out and back into the socket in the same instant, it started happening more and more often, to the point where it was every crash where i went over the bars.... (weakest point for the shoulder is when it is above your head)
it;d pop out riding, and i'd either, want an hour and carry on, or give it up until the next day.... according to the experts, this kind of trauma, you should give yourself 6 weeks off from putting yourself in a similar situation...
i stopped riding a couple of years ago, realising my shoulders were an absolute mess, the point is, if you dont get them fixed, then they will get worse, and looser, i currenty have to stay pretty beefed up with weight training to hold them securley, as muscle can help.
it'll be key hole surgery, and a good few months of the bike, keep popping it out, and you may get to a point where it isnt fixable, and where you need open surgery.
get it fixed, im planning on getting mine done at some point in the next couple of years, due to my job, hoping thats not too late... as as time goes on, depending on the tears and seperations and so on, it can mean repair becomes more difficult.
If your not ready for the best part of a year away from hard riding, building muscle around your shoulder will offer you some protection....
you're a bit up s**t creak if you havnt got private health care, as they will only fix it if it affects your everyday living and activities, not extreme sports capability
get on a top private health care scheme (some do fix existing injuries) and you can be in getting it fixed within a couple of weeks
Ive had a few consultations with the top upper limb surgen in the country, and have an ex, who after a gynastic fall, landed her self in the same situation and had the operation.
its not a great situation to be, need any details, let me know, ive spent the last few years reading into this.....

DH Rocks!

TAKE THE SURGERY. My shoulder was in the same mess as yours, I had to put up with 3 yrs of it poping out every weekend, i could pop it back in my self but it hurt. I took the surgery option, i had what is called the bankart surgery http://orthopedics.about.com/cs/generalshoulder/a/bankart.htmi wasnt allowed to ride my bike for 6 months after and anouther 2 months till i could start doing downhill again. since the surgery my should is almost as good as new. i have lost bout 10% movement, but its rock solid now. 2 months after getting back on my dh bike i came up short on a jump resulting in braking my collerbone in 2 places (same shoulder as they operated on) but it stayed in. Take the surgery, dont risk doing any more damage. plus you get a wicked scar.
