Dislocated Shoulder, broken bone in joint. Redislocation?
« on: August 14, 2007, 10:57:41 AM »

3 weeks ago I dislocated my shoulder badly and broke a bone in the joint. I was in the middle of know where so I got a few random heads to yank it back in, this took over 10mins of yanking and docs said this is what broke the bone! Doh!

I don't know whether to have surgery??? I have read articles of people getting back on there bike and it popping out again.

After 3 weeks I have still got very little movement in the arm, unreal amounts of pain and still a fair bit of swelling!

I am going to europe riding for the summer next year, I am jacking in my job where I have been for 5 yrs and goin to ride some gnarly ass s**t!

I have heard that surgery is the only way to make the shoulder reliable again. I would be gutted if I quit my Job and went to France dislocated it again in the first week and was fooked for ages.

Check you tube video of unprofessional shoulder relocation:

Yours sounds pretty bad. I dislocated my shoulder but didn't break any bones. Although it likes to pop out quite often I (touch wood) never get it popping out when I'm riding, only if I put it into an abnormal position (stretching or crashing etc). Usually it only takes a day or so now for it to feel normal again if I pop it out and I can go riding again.

I suppose the safe option would probably be to have surgery if yours is as bad as it sounds although not all shoulder dislocations are cronic and it may never pop out again.

Thanks for your reply, I think if I had got it relocated prefessionally I wouldn't be in such a mess.

My dislocation hurt a bit but it was more the shock of my arm being on my back that s**t me up. I am sure the real pain kicked in when the bone broke about 4 mins into the yanking. I have it on video and you can hear the twig snapping sound as they pull my arm followed by a pain surge and a face to show it!

Are the dislocations not to bad when it just slips out?

Yea they are bad and it fookin hurts but I'm pretty sure they're getting less painful. I didn't get mine put back in professionally either, for some reason it pops back in really easily every time I do it which is lucky. Probably the same reason it pops out so easily!

I'd go for the operation if I were you mate, seeing as you've done such a good job of it! It shortens the ligaments back to the normal size before the dislocation, meaning it shouldn't pop out again.

Yes I would say the same - if you have any doubts - which obviously you do by being on here - you should get it done! After around 12-16 weeks things should be back to normal pre-accident and with all the physio strengthening you will do it will probably be stronger than ever!

So have you two had surgery? I don't mind going through the pain again as long as it gets fixed! I now have two knackered shoulders as I pulverized my other collar bone a few years ago and had 2 ops on that lol! I lost most of my deltoid in the process!

As long as I can ride in April with no physical hold backs I will be happy.

Cheers guys for the advice!

Well it has been 5 weeks now, I have had a week of physio and I have now got about 20-25% movement in my arm and mild to moderate constant pain!

The Doc said to only have surgery if it happens again.
I think as mine was badly dislocated I should of had surgery, but do what the doc says.

It looks like I will be of by bike for at least another couple of months  Sad

I had dislocated mine 5 times before getting it repaired on the NHS!!

Mine dislocated badly a couple of times to the point where I had to be knocked out and have it put back in on the operating table.

I can recommend the surgrey. However I had done mine 3 times before the NHS even considered giving me physio which by that time it was fecked!

I dislocated mine once just diving into a swimming pool, once it got into a certain postion it just pops out.

I was off college for about a month having the op.

Right.... i have a bit of info for you on this one....

I started off with pretty sound shoulders, a couple of bad crashes, and what they call 'subluxations' - where the shoulder pops out and back into the socket in the same instant, it started happening more and more often, to the point where it was every crash where i went over the bars.... (weakest point for the shoulder is when it is above your head)

it;d pop out riding, and i'd either, want an hour and carry on, or give it up until the next day.... according to the experts, this kind of trauma, you should give yourself 6 weeks off from putting yourself in a similar situation...

i stopped riding a couple of years ago, realising my shoulders were an absolute mess, the point is, if you dont get them fixed, then they will get worse, and looser, i currenty have to stay pretty beefed up with weight training to hold them securley, as muscle can help.

it'll be key hole surgery, and a good few months of the bike, keep popping it out, and you may get to a point where it isnt fixable, and where you need open surgery.

get it fixed, im planning on getting mine done at some point in the next couple of years, due to my job, hoping thats not too late... as as time goes on, depending on the tears and seperations and so on, it can mean repair becomes more difficult.

If your not ready for the best part of a year away from hard riding, building muscle around your shoulder will offer you some protection....

you're a bit up s**t creak if you havnt got private health care, as they will only fix it if it affects your everyday living and activities, not extreme sports capability

get on a top private health care scheme (some do fix existing injuries) and you can be in getting it fixed within a couple of weeks

Ive had a few consultations with the top upper limb surgen in the country, and have an ex, who after a gynastic fall, landed her self in the same situation and had the operation.

its not a great situation to be, need any details, let me know, ive spent the last few years reading into this.....

TAKE THE SURGERY.

My shoulder was in the same mess as yours,

I had to put up with 3 yrs of it poping out every weekend, i could pop it back in my self but it hurt.

I took the surgery option, i had what is called the bankart surgeryhttp://orthopedics.about.com/cs/generalshoulder/a/bankart.htm

i wasnt allowed to ride my bike for 6 months after and anouther 2 months till i could start doing downhill again.

since the surgery my should is almost as good as new. i have lost bout 10% movement, but its rock solid now.

2 months after getting back on my dh bike i came up short on a jump resulting in braking my collerbone in 2 places (same shoulder as they operated on) but it stayed in.

Take the surgery, dont risk doing any more damage. plus you get a wicked scar.

I did pretty much same as you but i ended up in casualty having stitches to my chin however they failed to notice id fubarred my shoulder. So for next few months it kept popping in and out and kept having to pull it back in. So i went to the chiropractors to see what was going on. She explained that the NHS had failed to notice that i'd dislocated my shoulder causing ligament damage which had got quite severe given the amount of times id popped it in and out so the ligaments no longer had the tension to hold my shoulder in place. After a few sessions at the chiropractors it started to pick up. I got several different exercises to do and despite at one point looking like surgery was the only option. My shoulders now back to full strength and i just got to the chiropractors every to months to check my progress and loosen the muscles.

UPDATE - It has been ten weeks now, still only 50% movement in my arm and haven't seen much improvement in the last 5 weeks. At this rate it looks like another 2 months before I even get the ful ROM back... Gutted.

I couldn't bare staying in on one more sunny day, and I was getting some serious adrenaline withdrawal symptoms  Cheesy.

So I went and nailed it down a local trail, first time on my bike in three months! I LOVED IT!

I can't be doing it regular though, my shoulder is still very unstable and if I had a small off I would be screwed, to give you an idea of the strength of it, I can just lift a pint of beer  Wink but thats about it lol
