What Makes A Pro Rider?
« on: October 16, 2007, 16:43:36 PM »

After watching some episodes of Drop In 5, Andrew Taylor was really pleased with himself after landing some tailwhips. They all make such a big big deal out of a flip ect.... all these pro riders.

I've seen some videos (the VOD on pinkbike today for instance) of amatures doing double tailwhips. And theres that russian bloke doing frontflips off cliff drops.

What actually makes a pro rider? I have full respect for their riding abilities but it appeares theres so many better people out there.

I dunno, I guess it's not always just about the riding, how about:

- being able to perform consistently under pressure
- knowing the right people
- being in the right place at the right time
- really wanting to be a pro and pushing for it all the time
- putting the right image across
- being able to promote your sponsors in a professional manner

So you could be a pro paperboy because it's your job to deliver papers  Roll Eyes

what makes a pro, Has to be confidence, Dealing with pressure. I can't ride for s**t as soon as I know the clock is ticking, But I'm not a crap riding (well....) .

Ahhhhh of course! That'll be it. I guess on a vid you have 1000 attempts, whereas in a comp you get a set amount of runs.

Errr a paper boy is a pro paper boy if it's his main source of income.

If you are paid to ride you are a pro.

Professional ...look it up in the dictionary.

However what makes a pro? was the question not ..what is a pro?

So what makes a pro?

Dedication
Training
Diet

but more importantly...Genetics

I think he's just agreeing with you bud, he means you can use the best of 1000 attempts to look good or be fast on a video but on a race run you don't get your best bit's from 1000 trys.

Being brought up in the right community perhaps?

For example, russia, as someone mentioned earlier, is rarely in our headlines and topics, as where 'British Columbia / France / Italy etc' are constantly talking points and 'the' place to ride.

And with riders such as Brendon Fairclough and Josh brycland, IIRC, who were trained by Peaty for a while, again being in the right place and community .. ?

I also think style comes in a huge amount, trying new things and inventing new places to ride aswell, like where the new red bull rampage is/was to be held - Mexico i think .. add's to them being the leaders of the sport.

norco rider said about france italy and BC being THE places to ride, but isn't it strange how there is only a hanful of good french dhers,1 or 2 decent Italian riders and when was the last time you heard of a world champ DH rider from canada?
