dodgy knee
« on: October 16, 2007, 21:16:21 PM »

hey up!
just wondered if anyone had any advice on knee pain.

i get it behind the knee cap when riding, mainly when riding more aggressively, down hill, jumping etc.

i'm 35 years young and would like to think i'm not ready to retire just yet, but it's getting to the point were i cant ride anymore without pain killers.

Been to the quacks, might as well talk to my shoe!

any input would be greatly appreciated,

go see a sports physio!

They will look at an injury/pain and advise accordingly!

Knees are worst thing to screw around with!!

Take the hit and speak to someone in th know!

If you live in south east will point you in the right direction Grin

wot sort of pain is it?

only get pain when riding?

how long you had it for?

what type of pain is it?

any recent trauma to the knee area?

worse \at nigh tor day?

think it is best you see a physio or a podiatrist
any swelling, redness, hot, hard to move etc

ok. here's the full story.
the pain started about 3 years ago at work, thought nothing of it.
kept coming back. mainly when razzing about on the bike.
went to the quacks, got refered to an nhs physio.
didn't seem to have any great effect.
18 months on i went to a sports physio he wasn't really sure what the course of the problem was but wasquite helpful with some strengthenning exercises. he suggested i went to a pedietrist
this i did but felt i was being fobbed off a little.
he gave me some dodgy insoles to correct the knee alignment.
i had these in my boots for about 6 months and to be honest i wasn't sure if they where doing more harm than good.
meanwhile back at the ranch the pain was getting worse.
i just about managed to get a trip to verbier in june before the pain has become almost unbearable to ride.
i have now been back to the docs and have been refered to a proper bone doctor ostio something.
i have had xrays which showed no abnormalities.
and i am currently waiting for the results of an MRI scan.
phew! there now you know.
I guess i am looking for someone who has experienced what i am going through and totell me there is light at the end of the tunnel and im not for the nackers yard.

The pain is very sharp, just under the knee cap, that is to say on the back of the kneecap, and is worse when weight is put through the knee at about thirty degrees from straight.
you know when your in full downhill/singletrack mode knees slightly bent ready for anything.
thats when it hurts.especially when pushing off from that position.

Sorry to go on but you did ask.
Also im lokking at paying big bucks for some custom made insoles for my boots/trainers has anyone had any good results with these?

by peditrsit i take it you ment a podiarist?

insoles can work yes, if they have been measured up properly.

sharp pain make sme think maybe something to do with nerves, but dont hold me on that i am only a podiatry student, and i have seen your knee.

the osteo must like you causes MRIs are so expensive and they dont like doing them. Wink, that should tell them every thing

good luck

Cheers "dirtdemon"

Thats probably the most encouraging bit of advice i have had for a long time.

the insoles are from a place in kendal cumbria called Anything Technical.
They are meant to be best you can get and therefore v. expensive.

got my appointment through from ostio its 6th november. going to wait until i have seen him

Keeping everything crossed, hoping its not going to be surgical.

thanks again.

if you go to a podiatrist and get the insoles, they will custom make them for you, but wait untill you have seen the ortho

do you get any numbness or pins and niddles feeling at all?

no neither, the first podiatrist i went to said i over pronate when i walk and i think the biking has made it worse .
i ride with flats only and wondered if that had something to do with poor knee alighnment when pedaling.

honestly i dont know, but if that casues the pain, it may well be the case.

as for it hurting the knee, yes it can, but so can a load of other things.

i am sure they can sort it out, and the mri will help

hey
i have a similar thing i was referred to a private sports physio and found out it wasdue to my ankle being wonkey thus not keeping my knee straight. i was given knee streaghing to do and some insoles that were moulded to my feet.
i was an xc boy at the time and riding spds it turns out that was compounding the problem as they weren't setup right!!!
i was 14 when i started to get the problems and now at 22 still get them. moving to full suss and flats have helped with the riding but still suffer at work (I'm a baker) when I'm squatted for a while getting stuff out of the bottom oven i need to pull my self up on the table.
to be honest i should really follow it up more as Ive not seen anyone about it for 4 years!!
hope it turns out well

it is a childern disease,  with only a small percentage going into adult hood, may be called something different when an adult

Going to see the consultant in the morning.
Ihave just been looking ont web for clues to what he might say and found rather a good site on orthopedics.
Sounds like it could be chondromalacia due to patellar subluxation.
How do you like those apples!!!
Something to talk about down the pub.

What ever its called it looks like its going to be a long winter.

I may have to take up canoeing... or fishing... or snooker... or getting fat or ...
