What It Means to Be 98% Chimpanzee

wow , your story is so similar to mine , I'm 35 years , knee pain as you described started just over a year ago ,so i had a couple of months of at Xmas thinking i just needed to rest up for a bit . i bought a new orange 224 in March at the start of the season only to have the pain come straight back after my first ride out . just about managed 10 days in France in July and that was the last time i rode . Ive been to physios and they didn't really do anything for me , my ortho also did this "muttered something about osteoarthritis, literally under his breath as i was getting my coat on " which left me quite numb and depressed for a couple of days after . After much reading and internet trawling Ive come to the conclusion its one of two things 1) chondromalacia 2) osteoarthritis I'm leaning more towards osteoarthritis at the moment , i rode BMX from 84-98 and that did my body no favours , ill find out in a few weeks from the MRI i guess ? i bought a kayak in the summer for something to do other than riding and i loved it

it's funny when your a kid you think your going to live forever, you never think about the future or what effect your having on your body, smoking drinking just playing out on your bike, Playing football week in week out until i was 26 was my downfall. The trouble is 35 seems such a long way off when your seventeen. i only got into mountain biking a few years ago and i love it, the reason i got into it is because all my mates ride, they're already trying to get me to go to innerliethen next week, it really gets me down. i have said jokingly i am going to have to get a canue or something.
what really p**ses me off is more of my mates are just starting to ride, and are getting totally stoked about it, and i can't go out with them, i know i shouldn't go on, i have a lot to be greatful for. nice house. car. wife. kid. own business, i just think not riding is going to leave a huge hole in my life.
should have done drugs and not bothered keeping fit between 20 and 30. thats pretty much what my mates were all doing!

synthetic cartilage will not be around are a long time i recon, cartilage is such a complex strong structure, when they do it, some one will make billions of pounds!!!!
OA, will show up on x ray have you noticed any newish boney lumps around your knee?
could see if you can get a bone density scan, speka to your GP
but dont read everyting there is on the web, there are a lot of rubbish out there like wikipedia
Hi dirtdemon your right about not reading to much off the internet , i started looking into my knee pain problem and pretty much had myself in a wheel chair within 3 years . But the synthetic cartilage is well on its way ,and its currently being trialled now , i have a friend who's dad has just this week gone in to have it done , from what i understand its silicone based and is a lot less invasive than you might think . when he gets out ill post up some info on it just googled synthetic cartlige and found this dated 2002 http://www.salumedica.com/news_details.asp?ID=21

hey alex! 3211 posts, how do you find time to ride! i feel so humble knowing an immortal godlike! but thanks for looking i didn't know you cared.i guess you didn't expect to find me on here e. I went to the health food shop on sat and asked for some advice. she was actually very helpful i'm taking 3000mg of glucosamine and 3000mg of some kind of fish oil stuff everyday. i've changed my diet quite radically, no sugar, no salt, no prosseced food, no acidic fruit, no red meat. Loads of leafy green veg, lots of oily fish, i'm even eating frickin bird seed, i will try anything. I might just take you up on the kayak idea give me a shout when your next home and we can discuss it over a pint, thanks again!

Talk To Frank - I'm addicted to adrenaline!

I had a problems with my knees a few years ago, I was getting crunch/grinding of the cartilage, and as you had sharp pains. I got the same useless responses from the Docs! I now am pain free with little crunching. If your knee cap is unstable ie not being held in the correct position, you will get these symptoms. I spent just one year focusing on strengthening the leg coupled with taking glucasomine and Marine Chrondroitin. I also looked at getting the right proportions of muscles. So if you say have a weak area focus on that. I did a combination of: Squats - The most effective exercise for me! Some say these are bad for your knees, but if you do not lower your body so your legs do not pass 90 this is not an issue, also do not lock out at the top. Leg Press - works similar to the squat but a bit easier on the back. Hamstring curls Roman dead lifts - Also very good for working the Hams Not sure what its called but lie on your back, with leg straight (not locked) and lift to 45 degrees (many reps as possible each leg) WITH ALL OF THESE EXERCISE START LIGHT CONCENTRATING ON GOOD FORM AND INCREASE GRADUALLY EACH WEEK. Keep reps between 10-12. Your knees might ache at first, this is to be expected, but as you build your legs this will diminish... hopefully
