I run an Archos 404 with a Dogcam Prozoom 520.

Archos is a bit irritating, but does work nicely once you get the right parts for it.

As well as the Archos device, you need to buy a travel adaptor which enables the AV-in. The adaptor costs an extra £50. Also, some low-end helmetcams don't work with the Archos.

I much prefer Dogcam's own PVR500 recorder to the Archos.  You can adjust far more recording settings and I still havnt been able to get it to skip due to shock or vibration Wink

Actually, the PVR500 isn't Dogcams own make.

I had a PVR before an Archos, and the hard-drive in it died. PVR refused to replace it, so I had to buy a new laptop hard-drive to go in it (same product code, so it was the same part). It died again within a week of being replaced. Either it was a dodgy brand of HD they were using, or the PVR kept mauling it. Personally, I find my Archos works a hell of a lot better, and at a cheaper price.

I've used an archos with an archos helmet cam for the past few years now. does the job although the frame rate is low. it's good to just plug and play. worth getting the extra battery pack for it.

The spare battery isn't compatible with the Archos 404 though, so redundant for me.

I was thinking about getting an archos player with a head cam as well but wasn't sure what the quality was like. Has anyone got any footage from this set up? I was originally just going to get a camcorder but its more expensive and pretty bulky to carry around. I also could do with a new mp3 player so it would seem like a pretty good idea to get the archos thing or something similar.

Also, can someone tell me exactly what you need to get everything up and running. Is it simply just the storage device and the headcam, or do you need any extra bits and bobs, microphone etc?

And last of all, how much is the whole set up going to cost roughly?

Cheers

Archos 404 you can get off eBay for around £80.

The Archos camcorder costs £100, but as was said above has a poor framerate. Honestly, you would be best hitting the dogcam shop on eBay at the same time, and getting the most expensive one you can afford.

Also, the plain archos doesn't have an AV-in port, so you need to buy the travel adaptor which is an additional £50.

If you do buy the Archos off eBay, look for Luzerntech. They sell reconditioned archos, but they have a 30day replacement warranty, which is perfect. The first one I got off them had a knackered battery and there was a software error that crashed it every time I tried to record, but an email to Luzerntech, returned it (Royal Mail lost it for a month in their strikes), and I got a brand new one back, and this one works perfectly.

The battery in the Archos lasts a good time, I've recorded a full run of the red route at Glentress, just to test the endurance of the battery, and there was still juice left, though if you plan on using it for long periods of time, invest in the car adaptor, so you can recharge it between runs.

I'd recommend the Archos, even if the need to buy an additional bit of kit just to record is a bit daft.

I use the 404 as I couldnt be bothered messing with all the wires etc with the Dogcam / HD recorder / Lanc / Bat pack for helmet cam etc. The 404 has just one wire.
Its OK in performance, not cinema stuff but Its ok for what I want to see.  One niggle is how the lead from the camera, its not really quite long enough and is awkward to attach to your helmet / straps etc.
