Helmet cam....also for video diary
« on: January 31, 2008, 22:29:00 PM »

Evening all,

I've decided to make a video diary on the run up to the mega this year.

I thought a long the lines of capturing a snippet of the training and uk racing i do on the run up.

Introduce myself and some of the lads I'm going with including all the banter that goes along with it.

Then capture some of the journey down, ferry crossing snippets, funny things that always happen on a road trip etc etc.

Then the bike, the kit and ...my secret weapon.

Catch the qualifier, snippet of the evening in the pub

and then

The final event, sat in the starting grid...everyone around me, the atmosphere, everyone blatently shitting themselves and then finally

...capture the complete run of the main event.

post event beer too  Smiley

I have no idea about video equipment.

What am I going to need in order to do this?

Hardware

Editing software

Memory card size needed

Anything I don't know about?

Help please gents?

I've never done any video capture before and this will be one to show the grand kids if I get it right.

I'd say if you wan to do it properly you'll need a camcorder with AV inputs and a helmet camera.

You'll probably a camcorder that either uses tape or memory cards so it is more resistant to vibration and crashes on your run. DVD camcorders probably won't do more than an hour recording per disc, so would be suitable here.

If you get a tape one you'll need firewire port on your computer to get the footage off.

Sounds like a cool idea.  Smiley

Thanks for your advice, I've had a few pm's saying pretty much the same thing about av input recorder and a helmet cam.

I didn't realise there was another form of recording medium other than tapes and memory cards?

Theres DVD and Hard Disc too, both of which have precision moving heads, so won't take as much of a beating as memory or tape. I'd imagine memory would be the most resistant as it has no moving parts. But then again the lens and zoom functions might be more damaged before the storage mechanism anyway.
