If it's over 1/250 then the flash doesn't always sync up with the camera, that's what happened with mine to start with.

It is indeed a flash sync issue. You camera will only sync upto 1/250th of a sec (most canon/nikon SLRs do) without high speed strobe mode. Anything higher than 250th of a second and you'll see the actual shutter curtain coming over the sensor. Like above.

1/250th of a second is basically the shortest time your entire sensor can be open to light without the second curtain following on from the first.

If you want to run slightly faster sometimes you can get away with a stop over E.G. say your camera syncs at 1/250th, you can run it at 1/320th if you can crop the black line off the edge of it then you can still use the picture. This trick is better in the woods when the extra stop will help with keeping it in focus, but in the studio (or a self made studio), 250th should be adequate.

I find 1/200 fine for pretty much all shots.

Some cameras won't even take over 1/250 shutter with the flash, they'll automatically lower the shutter speed to 1/250 or 1/200.

I was about to say, the latest dSLR's can sync really fast, because they don't have the traditional 3 way curtain, each part is made of 3 parts, so can all move out of the way quicker.

To stop the light being too harsh, Diffuse the flash guns with an elasticated flash diffuser, cheap off ebay, or if your using some pro flash setup, move it further away and use a proper softbox/diffuser.

either way, a different shutter speed wont make the flash any less overpowering. Flash duration is a constant thing on flashguns and majority of pro setups. If you sync it any lower itll let in ambient light and maybe become blurred due to camera movement, however even if your flash synced up to 1/500th with your camera, itll still be at the same power from the flashgun and have the same affect as the flash duration is the same.

Its Aperture and ISO that affects flash, so chuck the F number up to F16 instead of F5.6 and you'll see dramatic results. If you've already done that use the softbox/diffuser approach as stated above. Alternatively you could bounce the light off the ceiling (if its low enough) and that'll give it a more natural feel. Straight flash like that will always look harsh, unnatural and create shadows, unless its stopped down enough to just add a bit to the colour.

Tried firing them on a different channel, there might be some interference thats setting them off.

Otherwise you get what you pay for...cheap ebay slaves!

I find a little red wire i added into mine allows them to trigger the 4000af and i recon it reduces misfires too...
