firewire/usb2 and a pc help
« on: February 13, 2008, 14:44:48 PM »

a friend of mine is trying to get a new vid camera, asked me to help out, so we found a decent minidv camera, now he wants to be able to edit the footage on his pc... i use a mac, and a firewire, he has a pc, ive never edited with a pc...

can you transfer large amounts of video with a usb2? how different is it to the firewire? also can he get some software for it, for free hopefully!!

Usually vid cams export to compute via firewire and i think most have it as standard.  USB is usually there to transfer images.

If he buys a vid cam it'll probably come with a video editing software, failing that if he uses windows he can use the built in software Movie Maker that XP has to offer.

i know that firewire is standard, thats what i use, but i was asking if pcs also use firewire, as there isnt a port on this pc and the one my parents use doesnt have a firewire either....

so, what i meant was, is it possible to transfer video using usb2?? im guessing it is just much slower.

as for software, yes editing software, but if pcs come with something im sure he has it already!

No, you can't transfer video with USB, you need a firewire port on your PC.

Movie Maker is the standard software suplied with most PCs and is more than adequate for basic editing needs.

Just buy a Firewire PCI card for the PC. In fact some editing programs (like pinnacle etc) come bundled with a PCI firewire card.

Not true, you can transfer video from video cameras via USB (I used to) but it is really bad quality compared Tongue

back on topic, firewire PCI cards are under £10, so should be easy enough for him to sort that out.
