I've been told that the femur takes 3 tonnes of sideways pressure for it to snap and 10 tonnes lengthways, and if it does snap it has a high risk of ripping your femoral artery, which is a big mother and would cause serious serious problems.

a hair line crack can be worse than you think it depend where the crack is, for example if you the neck/head of the femur then you are screwed beause that is where the blood supply to the whole bone is, if that is not sorted like soon the bone will come necrotic and bye bye whole limb

I saw a guy fracture his femur the other day at the top of Blackcomb, brought a full grown man to tears - he certainly seemed to be in a fair bit pain.
Had to get heli lifted too - IIRC, there's a lot of eposed major arteries round there, so it femur injuries are always treated as extremely serious.

Yes it is also quite normal to have to have a blood transfusion because of the amount lost through internal bleeding.
