2005 Marzocchi 888 Compression Cartridge
« on: April 15, 2008, 08:41:30 AM »

Hi Folks

There wouldn't happen to be someone out there who has a "spare" 2005 Marzocchi 888 Compression Cartridge (200mm travel) that they would be prepared to sell me?

I've contacted the very helpful folks at TF Tuned and they have some but at £90.00 a pop I'd prefer to explore other "financial avenues" before shelling out £90 that I don't have (and that the missus would be less than impressed if I spent). My other option is busking but since I can't sing for toffee and can't play any musical instruments I'm pretty much stuffed there too.

Cheers

Nope but what is wrong with the one you've got?  There isn't too much that can go wrong really, its a tube with some holes and a thread at the end.  I do have some '05 888 VT (very basic, and needs to be tuned with oil weights) internals if you get really stuck.

To be fair I've not taken them apart yet as it only happened at the weekend there but speaking to the helpful chaps TF Tuned they said I'll have blown the Compression Dampener Cartridge which is a very common fault due to poor design by Marzocchi (their words not mine). Apparently they can easily over-extend and blow the mechanism/cartridge...

Anyway, thanks for the offer of 888 VT but money is tight enough at the moment so I'm just going to continue my search for a replacement cartridge and if no joy then order one from TF Tuned. Apparently the importer which I think is Windwave don't have any in stock and it will take at least 4 weeks before they get some more in but I got the gist that TF Tuned have some...

You can have the VT internals for the cost of postage if you need them buddy.

whta actualy wrong with the fork, no comp damping, the adjuster does not work. clunking?

some times the adjuster can come unscrewed from the top cap and stop the adjuster form workig and dampning from working.

may be they jsut need a strip and rebuild.

I have always foufn marz to be more reliable than RS an manipoo

Hi Guys

Thanks for the offer of the VT internals and I may take you up on that if I get stuck if that's OK? I'm going to keep looking for the moment.

In terms of what's wrong, I don't know but that's an interesting comment about a rebuild may fix the problem which I'll give a go first - many thanks for that! Basically there's no compression damping, the adjuster clicks when turned but basically it makes no difference in damping and just compresses as if it was completely backed off. I'll see what the rebuild does.

Cheers

The first (04/05) 888's have a very linear compression action, 21 clicks makes little or no difference to slow or high speed action because the ports in the damping rod are too big.  You can/could buy a kit from Flooks et al that basically covered the first set of ports and forced a more progressive flow of oil through the upper ports.

A rebuild with the right amount of oil (220ml) will help, if that doesn't work, try 10wt not 7.5wt and if all that isn't enough, try and kind the the compression kit from Flooks or Windwave.    They used to be £50 or so.

Ironically and probably because I'm a wee lad the 21 clicks do make a reasonable difference for me so much so I knew immediately when the thing went "pop".

I'm now very much encouraged and hopeful that a rebuild will fix the problem so I'll be giving that a go over the next few days. Mind you saying that there is hee-haw in the way of technical documentation to take these things apart and put them back together. Someone has pointed me in the direction to a pdf and some notes on how to do it so should be cool, seems reasonably easy even for a ham-fisted mechanic like me.

Anyway, really appreciate your posts!

Cheers

Just to let you know, TF are doing the compression sleeve for £40, not £49.99 rrp.

Right folks - story so far;

Rebuilt and the fork replacing the oil at the same time (wonderfully easy to do) but no joy thing still isn't working.

However nke08 has posted saying that a Compression Sleeve costs £40 - what's the difference between a Compression Sleeve and a Compression Cartridge? Looking at the unit it you can't take it apart as it is about a 6 inch long "tube" of aluminium that has been crimped closed at the bottom. However £40 is a lot more palatable than £90 TF Tuned are saying I need to spend to get a replacement cartridge which to be fair when I look at it sounds like what I need to be doing.

No, sorry, the sleeve fits over the bottom of the compression cartridge and blocks a couple of the holes to make the compression more progressive and stop the fork bobbing and diving through its travel.  You need both I'm afraid.

Hi guys,

Sorry to hi-jack this thread but seeing as you lot know a lot more about these forks than me, I thought I ask the question; basically I have the opposite problem. The forks (888 RC 05 also) seem really stiff and not half as senstive as they previously have been. First we thought that the oil might be contaminated so I changed the seals and oil. When doing this I noticed that the oil in the rebound leg was filthy, but the oil in the compression leg was fine (very strange). Anyway, no luck - forks were exactly the same.
Then I thought that I might have put too much oil in (although I'm pretty sure I put in 220ml), so I dropped oil, pulled the forks apart, and let them drain completely. When I done this, the oil in the rebound leg was a stinking grey colour again, and this is after one ride!
I haved checked all internal components and there doesnt seem to be any evidence of metal on metal (although I havent pulled the cartridge apart). So I have put new oil in, this time only put 200ml in, and they are still exactly the same!! Really stiff!!

Has anyone had this problem previously? Has the rebound cartridge blown?
Any suggestions?

Cheers.

Rog.

Rog.

have you crashed hard on them recently?? they could be twisted which would make them stiff.

you also need to flush the lowers with enw oil, rather than just change it. simply put new oil in, and wash out the internals with it, however, after riding it with new oil, this should have done just that. its a tough one. maybe a bushing was damaged somehow in installation/removal?

what happened between them being smooth, and them being horrible??

ooh, try leaving the bike upside down to drain the oil to the top side of the cartridge, youll have no compression or rebound daming after cycling the fork a few times. all you should feel is the spring as resistance and a bit of bushing/seal friction. cycle the fork a few times, check if it is feeling sticky/stiff, this could be worn bushings/seals or even just crap in the seals and should be able to let you credit/discredit the oil as being the factor thats causing your forks to be sticky.
