Rather than paracetamol there is a tablet form drug which prevents cramp. Ask at your local pharmacy and they should have some. My sister uses it as she is a ski instructor and so needs to prevent cramp after working out on the slopes 24/5. Not sure on the name but they're normally very helpful at the Boots or wherever you go.

Cramp is usually down to dehydration. Just drinking water doesn't stop dehydration your body needs to replace essential salts and minerals as well. In fact drinking too much water can cause dehydration as you pee more!
My wife suffered badly with cramp at night while pregnant. The solution was to drink a lucozade hydroactive before bed and she had no further problems.
Also you might want to try if possible gentle stretches in the bath to try and elongate the muscles aroung the knee as no doubt they have stiffened right up being out of action.

Doesn't sound like you would be dehydrated but what cnb says is correct. I sometimes get cramps after a long day of riding - having some dioralyte or similar mineral/salt replacement drink is great at helping prevent them.

With your leg maybe you need to stretch/straighten and move it around to keep the blood flowing through it.

As well as problems related to diet that can result in cramping, the efficiency of the muscles themselves can be a possible cause...  Undecided

In most sports, not solely MTBing, most athletes/participants etc do not place a great enough emphasis on the flexibilty of the major muscle groups. I find that regular stretching (for the sake of increasing flexibility, not just warming up etc) reduces the frequency of cramp for me, aswel as reducing the ache in muscles after a ride, and even the risk of injuries...  Grin

Regular stretching gradually increasing the muscles flexibility, and therefore efficiency, so.. better flexibility=better performance- faster, longer etc.  Cheesy It really does make a difference, but flexibility training cn be pretty hard  Undecided

Still, it's worth it  Wink

By the way, if the cramp is around/above the knee, it's probably down to your quadriceps (thigh) muscles... so, you could search stretches for them on google or what ever....or i could just describe a few? Grin

Ok, first, does the cramp occur only above the knee or somewhere else as well?  Smiley
