I'm pretty sure that if he was to set up a seperate non VAT registered business he could run the races from that...
Makes me wonder if any other race organisers charge VAT on their entry fees already?

£67.00 for a race weekend is steep, especially when there's 2 of us racing:
£134 for the race weekend
£20 for a cheap campsite for 2 nights
£40 for fuel
£200 for us both to race one round, £1000 for the series!

That's assuming all is well and nothing gets damaged (like my shifter and brake lever on the trailer at Cwmcarn adding another £50).

im only assuming that a lot of the youth and infact all catagories will be smaller for now on then..its hard enough getting to the venues when you dont drive!
i know its not the organisers fault but surely they can try and sort something out with the tax a**holes?

A real shame, but then again don't blame Jason, it would seem that it is not his fault, however I may have to reconsider racing next year.

Do we now have to pay the extra on top of our pre entries?

I started racing last year after a 4 year break, towards the end of the year i worked out how much 1 run was costing! it was just not viable! hence why i am not racing now!!! even an MX race entry is only £20 for a regional, (no uplifts though) i feel for jason because as his series is doing so well he is now probaly gonna lose entries because of the increase, then turnover will fall and he can probably de register for VAT, or he could run practise days and the saturday, and ask for a "donantion" towards the cost of running of say £30, and then bill the race days properly for say £27, these are just my thoughts. problem is everything is just getting too expensive and a price increase like this will just put people off!

Surely this could be solved with some clever accountancy.  One company for uplift days and one for racing.

he could setup about three different companys and sublet. e.g. setup the bus company which then sublets to the race side of things and also to the praccy side of things. but im not 100% on how all this works.

as for the price its very steep. hell im in full time employment and im wondering if to pay or not. i do want to race but at £65 a pop..

it might just have to be a case of entering race day only, go to the track before hand and push up to get some practice in, then maybe even marshal the saturday to cover your race costs

Breakdown the costs and Im sure the organisers aren't taking an absurd profit, who is these days except for Tesco's  Tongue

How many attend a Dragons race ? 280 entries at £67  minus the VAT is around £16k for a race. With the number of events per year at six ish, then there turning over (minus VAT) £97k..   If there are two organisers taking a reasonable (low ish) wage, £20k each (which they are taxed on at 25%).... Then from the £97k your left with £57k per year to host all events OR £9.5k per race...
Not a massive budget, go get a quote for a Marque for two days and you wont have much change from £1k
Then what are the other costs ?

Looks like a labour of love to me rather than a business that someone would invest in.... ,Puts down my Dragons Den hat   Wink

It's unfortunate that no matter how true that is, it's still getting absurdly expensive to compete at these races.

You pay VAT on everything else, yes the step change is upsetting given costs have increased in recent times, but it's life guys.   My family run a garage,  currently 119p for a litre of diesel, 34p to the oil company, 83p tax, 2p margin.  And you pay VAT on top.  The government are the greedy ones.

Lots of questions and comments.  I've been VAT registered for years now.  BC told me cycle races were VAT exempt, so I followed it up and have run cycle races as VAT exempt for the last four years.  I've even been investigated before and had it OK'd.  Well now they have tightened it up and cycle races are still exempt if it's run by a non profit making organisation (a very difficult thing to comply with).  Suprise, I run it as a business because thats the only way I can see it working, with me doing all the work anyway, and this makes me a sole trader not a non profit making organisation.

How other people do it is ther business, VAT, TAX etc.  Here in South Wales we are forced to pay more for FC land than anywhere else.  We are forced to comply to uplift regulations that everyone else seems to be ignoring.  Blah blah blah

Right now the VAT man is asking me for the VAT on the last two years entries (like £20k plus VAT bill) so you can quit your bitching now. I've been running DH races for years now cos I enjoy doing it and look where it's got me, a VAT bill forcing me to the brink of insovency.  I'm adding VAT as I can claim little VAT back from the racers.  The money goes to the VAT man.  If it proves to be too expensive for people to race then entries will fall and it will finish.

I agree it's expensive but this is what it costs to make a DH event these days if you comply with all the rules and laws emposed on you.

The VAT can be avoided if there is a pool or volunteers ready and waiting to take over all my duties at the race and run a committee, but all the paperwork, buses, trailers, timing gear, repairs, toilets, marshals, consumables, meetings, entry inputting, trophies and other bills remain.

I went to Cardiff today and all I got for £65 was a pink shirt.

If you want a VAT receipt for your entries you only have to ask.  I think I've sent you receipts before Colin.
