Lots of questions and comments. I've been VAT registered for years now. BC told me cycle races were VAT exempt, so I followed it up and have run cycle races as VAT exempt for the last four years. I've even been investigated before and had it OK'd. Well now they have tightened it up and cycle races are still exempt if it's run by a non profit making organisation (a very difficult thing to comply with). Suprise, I run it as a business because thats the only way I can see it working, with me doing all the work anyway, and this makes me a sole trader not a non profit making organisation.
How other people do it is ther business, VAT, TAX etc. Here in South Wales we are forced to pay more for FC land than anywhere else. We are forced to comply to uplift regulations that everyone else seems to be ignoring. Blah blah blah
Right now the VAT man is asking me for the VAT on the last two years entries (like £20k plus VAT bill) so you can quit your bitching now. I've been running DH races for years now cos I enjoy doing it and look where it's got me, a VAT bill forcing me to the brink of insovency. I'm adding VAT as I can claim little VAT back from the racers. The money goes to the VAT man. If it proves to be too expensive for people to race then entries will fall and it will finish.
I agree it's expensive but this is what it costs to make a DH event these days if you comply with all the rules and laws emposed on you.
The VAT can be avoided if there is a pool or volunteers ready and waiting to take over all my duties at the race and run a committee, but all the paperwork, buses, trailers, timing gear, repairs, toilets, marshals, consumables, meetings, entry inputting, trophies and other bills remain.
I went to Cardiff today and all I got for £65 was a pink shirt.
If you want a VAT receipt for your entries you only have to ask. I think I've sent you receipts before Colin.
