Who said building NorthShore type stuff was expensive...?

'Cos if so, you aint been looking hard enough Cheesy

Back in Febuary, was buying some wood for a tech project from a wood merchant, asked if they had any scrap lengths. They did Cheesy

Lots of nice 4x2s and 3x2s, as well as random other bits Smiley

Cost: £5 (for home delivery)

Then just this week, doing my paperround and one of the houses was having work done, and had a load of wood outside (covered in nails). Asked if it was scrap and I could take it, answer- yes Smiley

Some really nice 5x2 (or something like that), which will be ace for stringers, and some 4x2s too.

Cost: £0 (got mum to pick em up in car).

Havent used any of the original pile yet (sorting out the dirtjumps first), so we now have a rather large pile of free wood Cheesy

So yeah, we're a bunch of 17yr olds, so cant afford to spend loads on wood (we split up decent pallets for the rungs), might not be as high quality as Esher/Herts, but still pretty darn good Cheesy

I do the same mate, its brilliant.
Call back again in about 3 months, and ask them if they have any more cut offs. Theyre usually happy for you to take it off them.

We have had many many large trailer loads over the years for Kindling for the fire  Smiley

Having said that, we're not all so lucky...  Wink   http://www.southerndownhill.com/forum/index.php/topic,149074.0.html

its always good to find free / cheap timber  Grin

with Esher Shore's pressure treated mill sawn timber, we estimate we've spent about £40K on timber alone in the last 5 years

mind you, there are 4km of trails at Esher Shore Wink

Just pallets are great, the wood is pretty poor, tiny nails etc etc.

Best to split them up, use the long bits for the rungs, and find some nice strong 2x4s etc for the stringers/supports.

Noticed a lot of yoiur supports do not have any diagonal supports, do the ladders not move side to side at all?

Building sites are a great source of pallets. We got 75-100 from one a few weeks ago, they took some serious shifting! It made a pretty wicked bonfire for a mates 21st birthday. Most of them would have been fine for northshore though.

the timber is the easy bit to scavenge. (unless you are undertaking something massive). the timber you have there wont go that far.

wait till you start needing to buy nails, tools and chicken wire.  Wink

guys, you need to get to building developers they have to pay to scrap the wood (or burn it) so ask them to put some aside for you... and as for nails well go to www.toolstation.com  and you can buy annular ring nails (up to 75mm) for 88p for half a kilo!!! And then theres the chicken wire oh well nick some off the chickens!
