I thought i'd just reiterate my comments here that I made on Descent-World *(where the race report should be shortly).
First of all a big thanks to Mike. It's not easy putting a race on, especially as the sole main organisor, and Mike did a fantastic job.
The two tracks to practice was a good thing. it's a shame that the rider spannered themselves at a time when it made sense to switch across to the other track rather than lose more riding time but s**t happens. For a chilled out end of season event it's all fun and means you have a bit more variety. Perhaps not the way to go for a big points NPS race etc but for a chilled event with a lot of inexperienced racers, it was a good thing.
Tape. Ok, a little on the thin side and i would have personally taped at ground level up top but that's all part of the learning curve. Stronger tape would have let you put it higher up but the biggest problem was that a large number of riders were just going through the tape and carrying on. I spent a fair amount of time over the course of a couple of runs up top on Saturday afternoon repairing the tape and the number of times I turned round to see some numbnuts go straight through a freshly repaired section and carry on drove me insane. Seriously, how difficult is it to fix the tape after you've gone through it? Bunch of lazy bastards.
And lastly, the tw*t who was shouting all the abuse at the marshall on sunday. Completely out of order and basically only served to show him off as an aggressive and obnoxious individual who has no place at a downhill race. If a marshall has made a bad decision then so be it, it's up to you to raise that if you feel it appropriate, with the correct people and perhaps have a quiet word with the marshall to explain what you thought was done wrong or badly. DO NOT scream at them that they're a tw*t or whatever words you think to use. We could hear the person several hundred yards away screaming at the top of their lungs and that is just plain unacceptable. In ten years of racing I have never seen such behaviour directed towards somebody who is helping to put on the event. Personally, if it had been my event, I would have found out which rider they were with and disqualified the rider.
All in all though a fantastic event, a good chilled atmosphere and a really enjoyable trip...even worth the 5hr drive each way!
