Bike insurance
« on: May 14, 2008, 21:24:54 PM »

Anyone here insure their bike? is it worth it?

The quotes I'm getting come out at 10% of its new value over a year, which to me seems quite high for just theft insurance. Its new value is getting on for £3000 I think now, and I do worry about something happening to it, but at the same time I  don't want to be shelling out all that money when I've never had a bike stolen before.

Opinions guys

All of my bikes are insured, come under the house, even if its nicked in town, aslong as its locked up to something solid-I'm insured.

Marks and Spencer household insurance covers individual items up to 4 grand, but it's 57 quid a month and they've got a string of stipulations about security. I'm just about to dump M&S for a bog standard home deal and separate bike insurance. Expensive but worth it. Looking at about 250 quid a year for a bike in the 3 grand region.
You'd spend that much on a car, and not think twice about insuring it. Not that you get a choice.

Weird, my policy is 13quid a month and states nothing whatsoever about security...

Yup same Im with Marks and spencer, Al you might only have contents insurance??? why it would be cheaper...
What stipulatons would these be?
There are some but in no means are they unreasonable, or what any other insurance company wouldnt require.
There is nothing about having to have a certain level of security....

My home contents insurance will only cover upto £1000, and they ran a mile when I told them they were custom built.

If you're a member of the BC the insurance is cheaper.  For one bike of £3000 it's £298pa, which is theft, loss and accidental damage.  Accidental damage is well worth having covered if you write-off a £1k frame in a crash (I claimed £600 off bike insurance when a wrote off my first expensive bike's frame and forks in a crash within 2 months!).  There are additions available too.  If you go the whole hog, £357 gets you all the above including use in racing plus cover within the EU for 90 days per year.

It's a pain in the arse when you have to pay insurance, especially if you never claim from it.  I couldn't afford to replace my bikes if the went missing (oh yeah, there's a multibike discount upto 15% with BC too) but the insurance payments are a bit more manageable.
