Automatic image resizing module?
« on: June 03, 2008, 01:31:44 AM »

Any possibility of fitting one, if only to prevent posts like this?

UKMB.net (another SMF forum) fitted one a while ago with good effect. Having horizontal scroll bars ruins topics. Even more of a ballache if you're at work on a pokey screen.

UKMB simply set a max image size, so that larger images have a width or height the forced upon so your browser resizes the image. There are one or two bugs (or used to be) in doing that which is why traditionally we have not done it, plus it can be annoying as there is no easy way to see the image fullsize (you don't even get told its been squashed). There is though a much better way to sort large images IMHO. I'm waiting for some feedback from the mod squad ATM and if it passes muster it'll go into the new template... which I must get around to launching...

Its now in the new template.

There have been a couple of reported issues with Safari and IE7 with layout resize issues, but I have not reproduced this myself. If anyone gets it themselves can they screen grab and PM me with the grab and details of the browser/OS. Thanks.

On another forum I'm on, the images are automatically resized and made into thumbnails of the original image. That way it's not too big and the original size can also be viewed.

Also, another similar point would be links, eBay for example, these are shortened so as to avoid the horizontal scroll.

Yep, I read it before I posted. From what I understood it said that you would resize the images, nothing about thumbnails. So I thought I would suggest it.

Sorry...

this image resizing thing is annoying me... is there any possibility that we increase the size slightly... having to press on every image to see what on earth its off sort of defeats the point of having the image facility... might as well just have a link if you need to press on every image before you can see anything.

Stop bloody moaning.
He has a point, but he likely has a big screen. At the time I put the code in was thinking of our iPhone users. Things may change, but I doubt a lot.

I agree entirely.  Both oversized images and scrolling was better.

I think it's a vast improvement Smiley probably could be better to have them slightly larger for people with larger screens, or maybe have a rollover that has it twice the size of the thumbnail, i.e. a viewable size but not ridiculously large! Not sure how easy it would be to put in with the current coding though!
