So what did very one think of the new doubles?!

Welllll, with the corners they put in you did have to try a bit to get over them, and with such steep short landings it felt like you could get a decent pump off of them.  They seemed a shame though: Bala is one of the most exciting tracks to ride in the country, but unfortunately 90% of the spectators wont see any further up than the field at the bottom, so I'd be all for putting something in there to make them go "ooooooh".  I.e. one much bigger jump instead of two teeny tiny ones.

I can see it from the organisers point of view though, no-one enjoys scraping the death-or-glory riders off of the finish line...

ooh Seb, only 5 secs faster than me in the end then...

I had a wicked weekend! First visit to Bala, and it was amazing! I will now be one of the many who raves about it. The whole thing from top to bottom is sooo good! Well apart from the doubles maybe, I think if you were hooning at them full pedally race speed you'd over shoot them big time.. I did in my first run so I didn't bother to pedal as hard in my second.

Yeah I agree Seb - about a lot of spectators only watching that bottom bit, makes the sport look a little bit like we just ride our big squidgy bikes down a grass field, but I guess nowt can really be done about that as the woods finish quite a bit further up! Hopefully they'll make their way up into the woods a bit. I was impressed at how many non riding spectators there seemed to be - and not just people who'd come with soemone who was racing. really cool riding past a whole bunch of spectators, it made it feel like a bigger race.

Wicked weekend, and I somehow got 3 practice runs in this morning as well, ace!

Its a shame Bala is used so infrequently because with admitedly a lot of work it has the potential to be a 4 minute track - even for the fast boys (and girls).

I'll be interested to see what changes for the national champs, I noticed a couple of new half-built bits where it crosses the 2nd fire road and before it gets into the woods, don't know if they're going to become part of the track but look like it could be fun if they do!

PS... I REALLY hope that the bridge over the road for the nat champs (presumably so they have a bigger flatter finish arena) will be optional, and to the side of it there'll be a (faster) jump over the road Grin

(Yeah yeah I know it'll never happen :'()

I heard talk of a bridge over the road and having the finish in the field next to the camping field, I also heard some people going on about a roadgap. All speculation from the grapevine though.

I loved the course, it just seems to get better year by year. The doubles were a bit iffy with how they felt (that first one had a madly sharp take off). Everything else was spot on though. The only major problem was the hay in the camping field set off my pollen asthma, which I hadn't had in about 2 years. On a good note though, I won the vodka!

A bridge over the road... I heard a rumour about that, kinda think it'll just make the bottom into a really annoying pedal after the rest of the track is so good.

It's not a rumour, heard it straight from the organisers.  Makes sense, imagine all of the stands/teams you get in the pit area at an NPS, then try and fit it all into the normal finish area, doesn't work.

And what's wrong with a bit of pedalling anyway, our bikes do have pedals ya know Wink

Luckily, I beat you by what counts - "a bit".  Doesn't matter how big that bit is, you podium shunner! Smiley

i really want something spectacular for the finish, and a pedaly bit at the end would be ok because it isn't as if the track tires you out loads... would be a little bit to make up some lost time.

FLAT PEDAL THUNDER!

Re: Bala
« Reply #43 on: June 16, 2008, 19:38:28 PM »

Were you marshalling joe?  Someone kept on shouting at me, but I was undergoing a bit too much of a sensory overload to work out who Grin

I did ok, got a 3:10 which put me 18th of 85 seniors.  I've been 18th like 4 times this year, would be nice to crack the top15 or top10 occasionally ya know? Smiley

Actually just checked last year's results, and I'm pretty pleased.  I was 3seconds quicker today, but the fastest time of the day was 4 seconds slower today (due to it being dustier and the two new sections).  So overall a 7second improvement on last year for me, that's cool Smiley

not tryna put u down but i hit a 313.198 on a hardtail  Tongue with a harsh mech ruining crash at the top and a floor scraper on the middle section. cant wait for my full suss bike its gona be awesome! be on that nxt year hopefully fingers crossed!

1st time there two and that is downhill unlike some tracks, no pedaling other than four strokes off the start and the rest was well off the brakes a rad!

defo favorite track pissis all over the others ive been too.
