FAO Milky, Fastlane, all the guys with media accreditation...
« on: June 12, 2008, 09:54:33 AM »

So I've been getting better at taking shots and although they're not up to the level guys are at I'm starting to think that my best a mag quality or decent enough. I'm wanting to get stuff published and I'm sure this a subject that alot of people would like to be covered so...how do you get into it? You've both been good enough to get press passes; is it a matter of waiting for them to come to you once they see your portfolio? How did you get your first shot into the press?

who you know and contacts get you a long way! also for a press pass you genraly have to be shooting for someone and have proof that you are.

just post pics up on here and on photog sites , work to the crit and improve , if your shots are good enough adn stand out people will start wanting them. if there not people wont.

as for getting stuff published if you find out let me know because i cant seem to get my stuff in mags eitehr haha

The problem is supply is far outstripping demand especially it seems at event's like the world cups/qashqai, everyone has a digital slr and wants their pictures published but the mags only use a few pictures.

Be the best and shove yourself down the throats of the places you want to take your shots. As has been said, every man and his dog has a DSLR, so you're going to have to be at the top of your game to get in print. Shoot every event you can, if it's something the publication doesn't have a photographer at, you might be in with a shot.

The biggest thing, in my opinion, is to look in the magazines, and ask yourself, honestly - are my shots as good as that? Because that's what the people that work there will be asking when they decide whether to pay cash for photos.

EDIT: Just to add - your have some good shots in your folio, but you haven't got any of DH races at all... why would a magazine pick up photos of your mates riding? The best way is to sell photos of an event they want covered, not to convince them to commission you - that's a much bigger risk for the publication, as they have no idea whether you're reliable or not.

Sorry if any of this sounds harsh, but it is SUCH a hard part of the industry to do well in. There are so many established guys on the scene that you really need to work your ass off to get known.

You've both been good enough to get press passes;

I don't mean to be harsh, but if you are at the stage where you haven't even figured out how to blag a press pass, then getting your photos published is a long way off.

Biscuit Fuelled, I try and get to races but its so hard with uni for the last few months getting stuff done. I have been to PORC but am looking into BR4R and some NPS too this summer.

Thanks for the advice guys, basically I'm only just starting out so I know squat about what goes in this industry. I'm working on contacts at the moment but as I said, I'm new and haven't been doing it a year, I just want to know where I'm heading in the future!

As Terry says, uni is not a reason not to do work. I'm year III product design as of September, and have to juggle it with photography, as well as editing the uni newspaper, and putting together stuff for Descent-World - the weekend before my final hand-in this year, I was driving a press car to the qashqai challenge in London to cover the event with another photographer.

You really, REALLY have to want it.

Uni is not an excuse as has been said.

I'm filming for my video Foot Out Flat Out and as I'm doing this in my gap year I have to juggle full time work Monday to Friday with travelling the length and breadth of the country. This is from CORNWALL!!! So basically it is 3 hours to get to South Wales and up to 12 hours to get to Fort William (19 hours in a coach). You really do have to want to be doing it and put everything into it. I havn't ridden my bike for weeks.

I'm going to Uni next year and as long as I can still afford it what with rising fuel prices I will be doing a sequel. I'm pretty sure I'll have more time to film.

As for photos, send them to everyone and like has been said, go to races and other events that a mag will want to cover!

How did you get your first shot into the press?

you get lucky and meet the right people, then you get better at taking good photos, then you get more luck if you have the photo they might want to use.  then more luck helps...

if you want to make money taking photos, go take wedding shots, if you want to take biking photos, i'd keep it as a sideline until you are really good then you might get picked up by a mag, but dont expect it to be overnight, as has been said, everyone has a dslr these days and most can take a semi decent photo, guys like victor lucas and steve behr have been around for years, and i think im right in saying victor only went full time photog recently(ish)...

good luck!

Good luck with it man, last year when I was taking a lot of photos etc (not events, out on the trail) I got a fair few photos published in photography magazines, not MTB ones but I got published three times last year and one of my images was used by samsung, also had a fair few in Wideopen and Edge, all I did for that was just keep on submitting photos to pretty much every magazine and eventually someone will take note. Hoping to get into a lot more though this summer.

Find a sport with more crap photographers!! Amazingly I have a monthly coloumn in Canoe and Kayak UK dedicated entirely to photographers.

The other option is to find a niche... remember that thing ages ago where Donny(?) etc raced some loony assed kayakers down a river... well, watch this space!
