Anybody have any suggestions?

i have a jvc hdd camera
It says the format is:

Format: SD-VIDEO Entertainment Video Profile: Video: MPEG-2-PS / Audio: Dolby Digital, Still: JPEG (PictBridge, DPOF compatible)

what software do people use or had experience with?
let me know how you got on.

i used ulead videostudio 10 to great effect and you can import ANY video format

do people think that the software MAKES the film good or is it the flilming or riding because i can only use i movie cos i am an average joe but cannot see how it can make much of a difference having £200 editing software. ? Undecided

Some video editors only accept certain formats and, cheaper ones find it harder to cope with better quality video. Theres also a lot more you can do with the sound and image that you cant do with cheaper software.

ARgggg Mpeg2 is soo annoying

ive tried loads of decoding things and did get it to work
but it is sooo much effort to change every video clip i do

i did read adobe premier accepts mpeg2
soo i have that on the way and hopefully all should be good.

Premiere is as good as anything else on the market.

Expensive editing software is only needed if you are editing to a high level. You could edit a basic film in Windows Movie maker if you wanted to. There are way too many people thinking that their shaky handycam footage of their mates is going to look like the Collective if only they could edit on Final Cut...

yeah things like imovie and stuff are well underrated... you dont need high end editing unless your going post heavy. which for an ammerture is probobly a bad thing.

for pc - premiere cs3 and sony vegas are quite popular and so is avid but that incodes the video to their format so you cant take it to different editing programs - bit of a bitch.

premiere is as close to final cut as i can find on the pc and gets my vote... but vegas is only 100mb if your being a bit dodge and dling it.

Windows Movie Maker is great for just throwing together a little video. But i'm not even a video editor, and when making a short film to aid my Final Major Project, i quickly found it's limitations. As John says, if it's s**t, it's going to look s**t no matter what you edit it on.

I've used premiere a lot and it's really nice to use, easy to add fx etc. Depends what you want to do I suppose, windows movie maker is fine for just putting things together, though the xp one seems to be really slow for me. It's fine on vista.

I think (Don't quote me on it) XP comes with Movie Maker 1, and Vista comes with 2, though it doesn't expressly say anywhere.

If you have a Mac (which you should do anyway if you have any sense) you can get final cut express new for 80 quid.  It is basically a slimmed down version of final cut pro, which costs about 600 quid and is used to edit hollywood films.  I have final cut pro as well (dont ask me how) and express is just as good, all the features you use regulary are on it, it has a similar format to the pro version and honestly i cant see where the other 520 pounds is going!
