I have Lowepro trekker bag and it was fine as my hand luggage
is the 'flipflop' bag the one with the pop up top with the zip in the middle?
if it is then it will perfectly acceptable.

and no xray machines don't affect your camera equipment.

In a bag in hand luggage is the best way in my opinion. X-ray has never caused any of my kit any problems although there's a good chance it will be searched.
