A bit of a n00b with camera's so don't flame me.

I have a flash thats mounted ontop of the camera. It has angle settings eg 45 degrees, 60 and 90.

But if the flash is at 90, ie. straight up doesnt that render the flash useless?bIf not, what does it do?

You use the 60 and 90 settings to bounce the light off the ceiling if you're indoors. It gives a softer, less direct light.

Only works indoors really..
You can use it to 'bounce' then light off walls/ceilings, etc to get a softer light on the subject.
