Bought myself a dslr, what now?
« on: June 27, 2008, 22:51:33 PM »

Bought myself a dslr off the bay the other day, impulse buy as it looked like a bargain.

Got a olympus e500 with 17-45 lens, hoya plcir filter, lowepro bag and a few other bits for a ton...

No manual though, charged it up and fired it up, on dslrs can i not see what im taking a pic of on the screen and only through the view finder?

Really dont have a clue what im doing now, so was wondering if its best to shoot in raw or jpeg?

What does the filter do?

Any info or tips would be great

Cheers

Dont shoot raw Wink
You will need special programmes to convert the files / even get them on your computer etc.
Theyre strictly for special occasions im afraid.

And yeh, the viewfinder is your friend, one of the main whole points of a slr (Y)

Looks like the filter is a circular polariser, it's used to get rid of reflections and enhance colours, but you'd need to read up a little on them to get the best out of them. Look through it and rotate it, you should see a difference.

I'm sure you could probably find a manual on ebay that would explain a lot to you.

Just play with it constantly, thats the best way to learn how to use it IMO.

Good luck with it, looking forward to seeing some pics from you  Wink

I've just got a dslr.
Nikon D40x with an 18-55 lense.

Will be interesting to see how it goes. Just waiting for my charger to arrive from japland.

RAW and JPEG depends on what you're shooting and how much you want to manipulate your photos.

And no SLRs dont allways dont allways have live viewing but you can see the pictures on the viewfinder after you have taken it so you can see what youre doing that way.

Good luck and start shooting Wink

Ps. I'm collecting my new canon tomorrow morning Grin
