perhaps the thing to understand about "trends" in either BMX or MTB is that they are driven by the companies putting out the products, and what these companies are giving their riders to use / wear, and the adverts that are being run in the magazines and videos
younger riders are very susceptible to marketing, and in a smaller scene you will often have 1 or 2 really good riders who every else follows, and emulates with the brands they buy, the tricks they do, and their bike setup, because they want to be like these "local heroes"
its something i have seen when travelling to ride in towns around the UK - i remember riding at Horsham skatepark last year and seriously thought they had been cloning the local BMX kiddies - they ALL looked the same and did the same tricks
where i ride in London, its just a huge messy mix of a scene and i really appreciate it because everyone has their own thing going on with their bikes, tricks and what they wear, we get the new era / skinny jean/ brakeless / black bike kiddies, the old farts like me who just blast around in a helmet doing big airs and not so many tricks, we get the "huckers" who come down in their full face helmet and wife beater vest and rip the jump box, the tech guy wearing smart clothing and not falling over much, all kinds of people
when you have been involved in a scene like BMX, Skateboard or MTB for a long time, you can easily spot these trends growing, and they are all cyclical in that it will blow up, and then fade as a new trend is launched
I remember in the 1980s with skateboarding when it became very fashionable (days of Vision Street Wear and Airwalk shoes) with lots of "posers" coming into the scene who didn't really skate much..
one of the problems now is that the youngsters are swamped with the media trends and many don't do their own thing for fear of rejection by their peers, which makes it quite bleak in terms of diversity of style, bikes, clothing, tricks, outlook...
