Broken collar bone :(

Broken Collar Bone
« on: June 29, 2008, 11:39:34 AM »

Went over handle bars because i JUST managed to clip my front wheel inside the landing of a double enough to make me lose balance. When i went over bars i fell about 8-10 ft and landed on my hand. Shock went up my arm and snapped collar bone.
Any one else done anything similar? How long were you off your bike for?
(i've been told 6 weeks till i cant start doing a few things then a month till it's fully healed)

It depends how bad the break is. If its a clean break and the bone is lined up then 6weeks to a month would be right.
However if its a bad break and the 2 pieces of bone are lying on top of each other it will take a lot longer. I had to keep myn in its sling for 2 months and then another 2 months after that i couldn't do anything.

I broke mine 2 years ago (3 weeks before i went to france!), bad break aswell, they were unsure whether they would have to operate on it. Wore my sling for about a week as i got fed up of it and was back on the bike after about 7 weeks. Did they give you some Codeine? that stuffs awesome!

If it's a simple break you'll prob be ok - I skiied after 3 weeks and rode after 4, having broken mine in March. I did fork out for laser surgery tho... I should think you'd be alright after 6 weeks, as long as you don't go doing anything dumb and rebreaking it Tongue - good plan to get rid of the sling, move as much as you can comfortably but don't force it (and try not to take anti-inflammatories as they slow the bone-healing process, according to the physio i saw)

6-8 weeks.  If it was a complex break then the hospital would've told you.

Unless theres a major overlap or fragments at angles its a fairly standard healing time.

My last two collarbone breaks each left me off the bike for around 4months.  But they were a little more complicated   Wink

Better get used to it mate, I had my first op about 2 and a half years ago and that shoulder still hurts CONSTANTLY.  Less so now because the other side outweighs it, lol.

Why were the anti-inflammatorys bad for you then?  They're pretty standard fare for a collarbone break, you allergic?

I've been riding a bike again for 2 weeks after having 3 months off, out of the last 2years I've been able to ride for about 6months total.  You get used to it.

I still can't play guitar standing up...

As this guy says, anti-inflammatories are supposed to slow healing and i was on them for over  week and a half

Phhhh,

I'm unconvinced by that.  I've seen physio's at two different practices and neither of them have said that.  It may slow the process down marginally but the benefits of not having masses of inflammation around the bone outweigh the negatives.

The key thing with a collarbone break is not to push it to recover otherwise you'll pay for it later.

Aghh I'm a girl!

I'm not actually sure why they supposedly slow it down - perhaps reducing the swelling and blood flow to the area also slows the rate that proteins/whatever can get to the site of the break to repair it... It kinda makes sense as it's our bodies' natural healing method.

Anyway, it's just what the physio told me and she was absolutely spot-on with everything else she said, from which movements I'd be able to do (and when), to how long I'd be off a bike for, sleep in certain positions, etc. She was part of this clinic: http://www.physioclinic.net/ who work with a lot of DHers & MXers

The gender symbol isn't enough for some people, I'm sure he didnt mean any offence Emwyn.

I can see what you mean by that.  I was put on a LOT of anti-inflammatories after my last break, the doctors thinking was that if the inflammation died down the bones might slot back in to place and negate the need for surgery.  Needless to say it didn't work.

I've just found a nice lump of bone under my steel plate that's clearly moved, the hospital didn't sound like it was a good thing, I nearly cried at the mention of another op to fix it!  Think I'll take the risk on leaving it.
