It'll be fine mate, good luck with your recovery.  I've had 3ops so far and my arm's still here. Haha.

I wouldn't be surprised if that numbness sticks with you.  I've still got some numb patches where my first op was, I think they're permanent.

Just take it easy mate, don't push it, keep on top of your physio and make sure you're not doing movements you shouldnt be doing (like putting your elbow behind the line of your back)

Good luck with it, once it's healed you'll be good to go mate.

Broken collar bone :(

Went to the hospital today guys. All good news. Had an x-ray and it's healing nicely because i've been so good with keeping my shoulders in the right position and sleeping on my back with no pillows for four weeks (so might treat myself to one pillow tonight). So hopefully just build muscles over the next 4 weeks and i'll be fine for when i next get to go riding, in November. Wish you all the best and hope you have a quick recovery because although you should be fine they seem more serious than mine. (My dad had a really bad one skiing and he has huge lumps in his shoulder but had no operations (when maybe he should have) and except for feeling twinges now and then he's fine Smiley )

yer its not the best of bones to break if you like your bed. i broke mine not to long ago i went over the bars and into a load of pot holes, i put my arms out to save me so my arm landed in the first one snapped my wrist so i fell more forward and my shoulder court in the next one and snapped my collar bone. it should be alright to ride within about 5 weeks after breaking just take it easy for a little bit.

I always ignored what the hospital told me with regard to how i should be sleeping and how i should always keep my sling on, i just did what was comfortable for me, surrounded by pillows to support my shoulder and so i didnt roll over onto it and ditched the sling after a week(after all your miserable enough not being able to ride etc, why make it worse?). When i went back to the hospital 6 weeks after being told they wouldnt be operating on me the doctor was very impressed with how well it was healing. I'm not trying to sound like i'm hard or know better than the doctors but it seemed to work for me, for all i know i could have been back on the bike sooner if i'd done what they said.

I followed the doctors orders to the letter all the way through both times, and had my recovery times halved in comparison to what they were expecting...

right, i broke my collar bone not last tuesday, the one before, so nearly two weeks ago, had an operation on it the friday after ive done it and all is healing well. The only small problem is im going absolutely insane with boredum. I normally like to be out all the time i can, riding bikes, swimming, running, etc but now i can do jack, does anyone know any excercise i can do that will be easy on it but still keep me occupied? obviously the doctors expect me to sit still for 6 weeks and let it heal which i know is what i should be doing but i will go insane.

HELP!

Hey guys and gals, I really need some advice......

I broke my collarbone about 18 months ago, (and rode home afterwards no less!! -no thanks to my riding buddies!) After it had healed, I thought nothing of it, but 6 weeks ago, i was deadlifting about 80 - 100kg's on that arm, when I felt a crack, and my shoulder visibly moved down about 1/5th to 1/4 of an inch.

I have been obsessing that it is now a completely different shape to how it was after the first break, and have had so many different diagnoses, that i am now confused.

I have broken so many bits and bobs on myself over the time i have been biking, and I like to think that by now, I know when something still aint right.

I can't keep my arm in a sling because it actually hurts more than NOT using one.
Sleeping is constant agony , and i frequently only get 3-5 hours or less a night.
The painkillers (Diclofenac and Dihydrocodeine) don't seem to do much, but then I'm usually like that with painkillers.
My shoulder grinds whenever and however i move it.

Anyway, I have been told things ranging from ''there is nothing wrong with your shoulder, take these painkillers, go home and get some rest for a week or so'' to ''there is clear evidence of a re-fracture, and so use this sling and these painkillers and come back and see our fracture clinic in 4 weeks''

I have xrays and doctors notes, but wha the NHS has done so far doesn't seem to stop the pain that occurs EVERY day and EVERY night .

All in all though, all anyone keeps doing is prescribing painkillers and slings, even after i have told them of my reasons for not endorsing the sling, and the ineffectiveness of the pills they seem to want to get down my throat.

I have just been given another doctors note, to make an appointment at another fracture clinic, and whilst i know you guys are here for being bikers like myself, and not doctors, I am hoping someone else has had some experience of this that they can share.

I really hate moaning, but after six weeks+ of little sleep, I am now desperate!!

to top it all off, I just recently found out my chainstay snapped 1 day out of warranty!!!!

so far 2008 aint shaping out too great!!!

Ive broke my right collerbone 9 days ago for the 4th time. lol

By day 3 i was going about slingless as it was causing me more pain than anything else.
Prob something to do with having surgery on the same shoulder back in 2004 to stop it dislocating.

As long as you are carefull with what you do after youve broken it im sure you'll be fine. Im driving now after resting it for a week but as long as your not lifting heavy weights and daft stuff like that than you should be ok.

Only problem with broken collerbones is def the lack of sleep.

yeah i found the lack of sleep was such a pain. i've just passed the six week mark and i'm considering trying to sleep on the side that i have broken because as you guys will know, if you cant sleep on anything but your back, all you want to do is sleep on anything but your back. and yeah breaking it four times is really quite impressive actually and in response to krayzeebyker i'd be unsure what to do as well but i guess just keep pushing the doctors that are concerned about a possible fracture as it certainly sounds like you've fractured if not re-broken it and it is much better to get it sorted now than have to have it re-broken and set when it's healed in an awkard place.

It def sounds like it broken again mate, i know what you mean about the pain. my shoulder in now shorter and sits an inch lower than the good shoulder. i cant use my sling cause of the pain it produces, i can only manage 10 mins in the sling before im in mega pain, feels like a trapped nerv.

Take the painkillers, its not going to stop the pain but should take the edge off. other than that mate keep pushing the docs and hospital.

Let us know what they say. im not coming up to week 3 of having my collerbone broken. im sleeping shed loads better. but still get pain if i do to much with it or lift it to high.
