Didn't get in Sad Though i'm pretty sure with all the work I have now (And my grade - It was predicted lower) a re-application would be succesfull! Could name a hundred things that didn't go my way, but i just wasn't good enough on the day (Though my missus got in, and i handcrafted most of her portfolio, so somewhere sometime i'm doing something right Grin - At least she can tell me if it's truely any good, they're very cloak and dagger about their facilities etc)

My Tutor is trying to hook me up with a place on a Commerical Photography course ran by one of his old Uni friends at Bournemouth Arts. Major connections with Nick Knight and work placements in New York studios, but as the course is full the best i can be offered is first refusal on any places if people drop out.

Ah oh well mate, at least you got an interview. I had MMP out of my ND in art and design, and chose Newport because out of all the uni's I looked at, they had the best facilities. I had a look at the new commercial photo course at Derby, and even though they had £21million or something invested in new facilities for art and design, tbh they still wern't very good. I've heard a lot about the courses at Bournemouth, most of which were very good. To be honest though, the one thing I can't wait to use is Phase One backs, they have two of the 39mp ones at Newport, so I'm going to be like a kid in a sweet shop!

Sorry for the late reply but I'm starting up a student photography website and I was wondering if you any of you would like some exposure: displaying your portfolios etc.....?

Cheers!

Are photographic courses at BTEC or equivilent level technically based around fundementals of photography (the practical side of it all), or do they cover the broad spectrum of topics to set you up as a career photographer (commerce, marketing, design, business mangement etc)?

I already have a job - not in photography, but would like to get a "decent" photographic qualification part time at some stage.

Right I might be talking absolutle bollocks when I say this so someone will have to confirm it for me, but i wouldn't of thought they'd teach you the business management side of photography, you don't even get taught thsat at Uni level, or at least not on my course. I'm expected to do all that myself. You'll probably get taught how to use the camera's, how to print, and all that stuff, and you'll be looking at the theory side of it all... Genre's, political issues photographers raise, etc.

BTEC's normally just pave the way in a specialist field for you to go onto Uni.

EDIT: Just had a quick look for the course, and this is what I got;

BTEC National Diploma in Photography

Art, Design, Photography and Multimedia
Entry Requirements

4 GCSE's A* -C or Intermediate GNVQ/BTEC First Diploma
at merit grade. Applicants will need to bring a portfolio of art
and design work to interview. For mature students, over 19
years of age, entry qualifications may be waived.

Content

Studio and Location Photography
Advertising, Editorial and Documentary Photography
Digital Imaging
Darkroom Skills
The course also shares drawing, design, creative use of
information technology and contextual understanding with all
National Diplomas in art and Design. Students are encouraged
to take a broad view of photography and include elements of a
wide range of art and design disciplines in their work.

Photography requires contacts to go far, like most media based careers, so the courses never focus on commerce, business management, and marketing, as you get work through your contacts. You'd get help from your lecturers to get contacts.

I'm stll half asleep so sorry if this doesn't make any sense haha
