Advise: Padlocks and Chains
« on: July 03, 2008, 09:19:19 AM »

Cut a long story short I now have to lock my bike up in a 'secure' location at school where I work rather than keep it in my office.

I'm not taking any chances so I need to find the best quality chain and padlock moneys not an issue right now, nothing too stupid.

I will be taking out extra insurance cover next week as that's when all this rubbish starts.

You should look to use two different lock types - that way no one tool will be able to break both locks. Something like a motorcycle chain and padlock and the a kryptonite new york u-lock. I hope though you don't have to cycle with them in yoru bag!

No, I'll buy them take them to work, leave them locked to the rack and thats it.

It's just such a pain, my bike is in the office behind, 'my' desk out of the way, it's not a health and safety issue and the headteacher knows it costs a fortune.

Brings back being treated like a child when I had to lock my bike with eeryone elses and worry about it all day long.

Hmm, then some toe rag comes along after you have left and puts super glue in your locks. You arrive the following morning now being unable to lock your bike properly... Buy a cheap beater for the commute? It could cost you less than two good locks!

yeah seems the best plan of action, i hated leaving my nice bike outside during school,  constantly come back to find suspension settings fiddled with that take ages to get right, gears changed which is a ryt pain as streches cables after there forced. the worst one is when they sit on the bike and start taking the piss pretending to ride, all the while the back wheel is stuck in the rack and it gets buckleled. could cost you alot of money and develop gray hairs leaving your nice bike outside with a bunch of scallys.

The bike racks inside the school, I have to take my bike into school and into the boiler room so it's safe to leave locks there, seeing as the rack is for the teachers bikes not the childrens.

its a shame you cant put it in a garage

My garage is a fortress, i have a door anchor, a lock on the door, then a bolted chain loop on the wall with two locks around my bikes! i need 4 keys just to go for a ride!  Grin

Seems I can hold off the lock for a bit.  Spoke to the caretaker and they lauhged at what I said, there's no way a bike rack will be up by next week as it needs planning permission form the company that owns the school building and the location is not suitable becasue of health and safety reasons so als good for this year.

You need a "sold secure" motorbike lock and chain, the insurance will probably insist on a "sold secure" rating anyway.

when you get a lock, make sure it has a sold secure gold rating. it will show this on the packaging as the company will want to brag about it. sold secure gold is the highest insurance level lock you can buy for a bike. if you get one of these and your bike still gets nicked, the insurance company will cover it.
