its doubtful whether you are breathing your own exhaust breathe whilst riding down a hill....even the smallest holes in the chin guard will pump the helmet full of litres of air / second whilst moving forward

you would notice a lack of ventilation whilst climbing in your full face (for sickos!), or perhaps riding up a north shore ladder, but moving forward there should be no issue

this is one reason why MX helmets can feel too hot on MTBs, the MX helmet is designed to ventilate whilst riding at 40mph+.....

May I suggest that you browse the helmet market in a little more depth. I am sure if your current lid is giving you issues, you can find another. Breathing in your own air must be preferable to breathing in dust and all that in terms of comfort and oxygen yield.

What do I know, anyway, I wear a pisspot...

Interesting thread though.

I know what you're saying but can't say I find it a problem getting air in your lungs. When you're moving at even slow speed I reckon the air gets replaced OK so you get just as much oxygen.

That said, I took the foam and the plastic roost guard out of my 661 MX mouthpiece because I found it pretty stuffy and claustrophobic when I first started wearing it.

Just as a quick aside, for the guys who're breathing their own exhaled air, what lids are you using?

I binned it, face first, into soft soil from what felt like about 10 feet up on Tuesday, right in front of PSlide in fact. Helmet dug in good and proper and I got a nice mouth-full of dirt. Had my chin guard been any more open, I reckon I'd have dug in even further meaning lost teeth/more cuts to my face.

Yeah, that was very entertaining Alex...  Grin

Let's get a few things straight about what I'm proposing here.

I'm an engineer.  I'm always looking to see how things can be designed better.

As downhillers, we have to wear full face helmets to protect us.  Open face is not an option.

Downhill is getting to a point at the world cup level that the smallest details, like the fabric of your skinsuit, is becoming important.  As an engineer, it's pretty exciting, because downhill is moving towards the technology of say F1, world cup skiing, etc.

If this were F1 or world cup skiing, we'd have downhillers in 35 mph wind tunnels analyzing air flow, including breathing, so it could be optimized.  This is a World Cup sport after all, with World Cup level athletes and it's very competitive.  Like I said, more oxygen in the blood is a good thing.

Also, as an engineer, those saying that a more open design would sacrifice strength...well, I have no doubt that with todays modern materials, there would be no problem designing a more open chin guard that is stronger than the current carbon / fiberglass shell type.

Come on boys, stop thinking inside the box and making compromises...

Right.  Got that off my chest.  Tongue

So I've got a big schnoz (nose) and wear a relatively cheap 661...perhaps I just need to get a D2...  Roll Eyes

So: We need aerodynamic full face helmets with a good oxygen supply.

Fortunately for all of us, the above has already been made.

Clearly comes supplied with integrated Leatt.

I think the point your missing is that, It isn't a problem, Even when sitting around, I easily get enough ventilation. I went and tried some helmets on today though, The chin guards were rediculously close to your mouth, Like the Bell Belistic, I could understand the breathing problem with helmets that have chin guards touching your chin... .

So the answer is, There is already helmets on the market that allow you to breath easily!

Well, at least road cyclists don't seem to have a problem with progressing technology...

I appreciate that most people don't think it's a problem.

But that doesn't mean that the current design is optimum...   Roll Eyes

Right, put pencil to paper 20 minutes ago and this is what I came up with.

Hmm, think I'll call it the Oxygen.

Featuring these stupendous, ummm, features:
 - Aerodynamic peak (similar to rear wing on F1 cars, attached in the center)
 - Optional integrated goggles with reduced drag coefficient (similar to aero helmets the roadies use)
 - Increased air flow to mouth and nose for more oxygen

Coming to a World Cup near you by.........probably never..........  Smiley

Hmm, If you had like a filter in the front, to stop dust and mud getting up, That would be pretty cool design.

Peak needs work doing to it I wreckon.

looks pretty good but the main problem i can think of is that as it is just made of pencil and paper it would be quite weak, and could easily be damaged in wet conditions, perhaps at least photo paper would be a better option as it seems less vulnerable to rain/mud

integrated lens, pain in the ass for people who wear glasses Wink

nitpicking here.

Of course progress is the way to go.

try playing paintball those masks are way close to your face.. you dont have speed to add to the ventilation, yet people do fine.

the oxygen thing you mention i would make an educated guess is a mental state.
you breathe in may be partially your own exhaust fumes Wink    but trust me, the oxygen level is nowhere near being low enough for it to affect your performance.

A quote from a mates older brother who used to ride mx in an open faced helmet "s**t happens so get up wipe it off your face and rember to weare your fullface next time" full faces also sstop you eating mud and leaves, iv never had a problem with it being to hot in my fullface from biking or mountainboarding and i alway wear a full face for both.
