Has anyone ever thought about why full face helmets are designed the way they are? Well, I've been thinking about it, and it does make one wonder... Before even getting to the issue of aerodynamics, let's consider rider comfort and performance. Whenever I put on my DH helmet after riding in my XC gear, I feel like I'm suffocating because of the face guard. I'm breathing my own breath. It's hot and it's probably reducing the amount of oxygen I can get into my blood to power my muscles. So why is the face guard solid? Why can't it be much more open? All it has to do is protect against impact. They stick some token vents in there, as if they do much good... If it were open and you could get 5% more oxygen in your blood, imagine the difference that could make on a course like Ft. William! This looks naff, but the face guard is more open... Imagine the fresh air! All I can think is that full faces are traditionally designed this way because this has always been the way motorcross helmets are designed...to protect from roost, etc. But that's not a problem in DH racing. It's just daft. I reckon the old full face helmet needs an redesign from the ground up for downhill racing...

The solid chin guard stops all the crap/dust getting in your mouth, Imagine the 100% decrease in performance when you start choking on dust.
Plus, Wearing a baseball helmet would look gay.

Wouldn't say so, if you're having that much of a problem might I suggest investigating the possibility that you have an incorrectly fitted helmet? As for recycled breath, once you're moving airflow increases dramaticallty... This looks naff, but the face guard is more open...

Those things shouldn't be allowed to be sold as full face helmets, theres a reason you only ever see XC boys with them on and it's because the face guard is nigh on useless. Also IIRC they pop off with little studs, hardly useful. All I can think is that full faces are traditionally designed this way because this has always been the way motorcross helmets are designed...to protect from roost, etc. But that's not a problem in DH racing.
Since when? The only alternative to keeping the amount of shite I hit out my face would be a mask which would be a heck of a lot worse than a full facer. Mud, s**t, gravel, water, you name it and it's probably still got past the "pointless" roost protection on my MX helmet. Now don't take this the wrong way but are you a fast rider at all? Or do you hit things slowly, thus never getting the full benefit of your kit? I only ask as that seems the only way you could have come up with this theory, I'm not having a dig, just wanting to see where you're coming from...
